Not what I was expecting

I have to admit that I'm not the biggest fan of horror movies, not because I'm scared I just don't find them nearly as interesting as others do. I'm not saying that I don't like them, I just prefer other genres more, so I wasn't as excited about It: Welcome to Derry as others were. I have seen the recent It movies and thought they were pretty good, especially Bill Skarsgård. I'm glad they brought him back for this series because he's once again the best part of the show. It's gotten good reviews and currently has a 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience however have given it mixed reviews. I'm more on the side of not liking it than not. Maybe that's because I didn't have huge expectations or know much about the book.

So intense, love the character crossovers

Only 2 episodes in and so far I'm loving it. The effects are top notch and I'm enjoying more then the recent IT movies. It's very intense and no one is safe.

Great they managed to get Dick Halloran from The Shining into this series. Sure it's light on details and backstory so far, but if you're watching this you probably already know the lore of IT.

Hoping they can keep ramping up the intensity as the later episodes drop. Love the nostalgia of all the old cars.

Wish there was more good horror tv shows out there. I'm enjoying this for the effects more than anything. Hope they add more backstory in the later episodes.

First and second episode only review

Episode 1. So, I just watched the first episode of the new IT series, and yes, I'll keep watching because I've always been a huge IT fan.

Honestly, I get that IT is all about imagination... it's meant to be something you experience through the eyes of children, where fantasy and fear blend together. That part I respect. But the way they used CGI and fake-looking sets... nope. It completely kills the vibe. It's overdone, unrealistic, and honestly kind of ridiculous at times.

As for the child actors, they're not terrible, but it feels like déjà vu. Like we've seen this exact lineup a hundred times before. Everything feels recycled and generic.

At this point, if we're going to rely that much on CGI, we might as well let AI make the whole movie and honestly, I think I'd prefer that over this cartoonish visual style.

Anyway, that's just my take after episode one. I'll keep watching and see how it evolves but let's just say, my expectations are officially on pause for now.

Episode 2 of IT: Honestly, it just confirms what I said in my review of the first one, the CGI completely kills the atmosphere. It feels like they're trying to make up for a flat storyline with visual effects, but it only makes everything look fake and lifeless. There's no tension, no real fear, nothing unsettling about it.

And again, it's all so déjà vu. The kids are OK actors but it's the same formula we've seen a thousand times: the bullied kid, the abusive parent, the depressed mom, the family trauma. It's like they're following the Stephen King cliché checklist, updated for 2025.

As for horror? None. Not a single scene feels scary or even suspenseful. Everything is so polished and predictable that you never actually feel on edge. It's starting to feel more like a sad drama about traumatized kids than a horror series.

Honestly, I'm just waiting for Bill Skarsgård to show up, because right now, even the plot feels painfully slow and uninspired. Nothing grabs you. If they don't start bringing real horror into it soon, this might just end up being another overproduced, CGI-filled flop.

Still watching because I have no self-respect

I'm three episodes in, and honestly, if this wasn't an HBO show, people would be tearing it apart. The effects are awful, the pacing is dead slow, and there's nothing remotely scary.

It's like It lost its bite and decided to mope around instead. I'll keep watching, but only because I clearly hate myself.

It may depend on your age

I think how you feel about this after the first episode depends on how old you are. Those of us who grew up reading King probably hate it while younger fans probably love it.

I'm afraid to say I thought it was absolutely awful. Someone is trying to mix a 80's Spielberg feel and look with a stranger things vibe, failed badly and has also totally ommitted the King element.

The acting is ok but just ok. The story is all over the place and the special effects are laughable, how on earth did anyone watch that and say, that's great, we'll go with that????

The story was confusing but of course that could all come together as it's very early days so it could be a bit unfair to dismiss it so soon.

But it will have to improve massively. I'll give the next episode a watch and see how it goes but if it is as bad as the first, it will also be the last.

When you compare this to Mr Mercedes the gap in class and talent and watchability is enormous.

After this and The Institute it may be time to stop people adapting King material.

I sincerely hope Mike Flanagan had some a much better job with Carrie.

So, ep 2.... More rubbish effects and to add to the aforementioned "nods", you can include close encounters to the list as well as many other shows when it came to the supermarket scene, think From for one example.

My opinion hasnt changed: muddled story interspersed with poor and far from scary scare scenes. Ideas taken from so much other stuff it lacks any originality at all.

This feels as unKing like as you can get.

I'm.going to stick with it just to see how bad it gets or if it miraculously gets better. Not holding my breath for the latter.

Now we have someone's face dissolving in front of a mirror.... For goodness sake, is there ANYTHING original in this garbage?

That's me done. This is totall awful. Not the casts fault, the writers and creators need chucking down a drain.

For the younger ones

Well, this is for the Netflix generation, kids and people who dont watch horror that much, and I respect that, streaming is for everybody

But for me, this was really garbage, story is copy paste and no new ideas either, the horror is reminding of peter Jacksons old movie braindead and not in a good way, its boring and the effects are so bad its insane, acting is on the limit but survive

I dont think you can milk that much of this book anymore, it is reinvent the wheel all over again and in the end even the kids who loving this drivel now will get tired.

NOT good! (So far at least...)

My verdict after episode 4:

Mostly terrible acting, boring dialogue writing, very bad CGI... There are so many issues with this show: It's not scary, there is almost no tension and most of the characters are not interesting to watch - It's easier for me to mention the stuff I like than to mention all the flaws...

There is one scene where the editor did a great job with cutting to the sound of people clapping, there was something really unexpected happening in the first two episodes that I am not going to mention for spoiler reasons and a small storyline involving someone's parent was pretty dramatic in the first few episodes. There is also one semi-cool shocking moment in the middle of the season. But that's basically it - and even in the good moments the terrible CGI ruins it a bit.

Another big problem is that a huge part of the show just feels like a retelling of the movie - but like a much less good version of it.

In addition to all that stuff I got the impression that the show kinda breaks a part of the Derry/Pennywise logic early on - and not in a good way: After the first two episodes I no longer understood why the Pennywise character from the movies would not take easier ways to get his food - he seems a bit more powerful in this series.

Underwhelming and slow

The series isn't really a true continuation of the It universe. Honestly, it's a bit boring, with too many unnecessary dialogues that slow down the plot. There aren't many scary moments, it feels more targeted at a younger audience, at least that's how I see it.

And while the CGI looks good, the horror element is very thin. If you're expecting something truly "horor", you'll probably be disappointed. Still, it has potential to develop into something better, as the third episode was a bit better than the first two.

CGI clotted tripe

I am on the 3rd episode and my problem is the same problem I had with the 2 movies, which was it relies far too much on CGI and horror tropes to make it even remotely compelling. Also, as with period pieces, they overdo the whole "Oh, look at us! We are in the early 60s!" with the wardrobe and mannerisms that are far overexaggerated than reality. I grew up in the 60s and it's comical on how everyone is dressed and the how they acted. Truth be told, hardly anyone dressed that way, and they sure didn't act that way. Yes, I know, this is fiction. Yes, I know, reality is truly boring.

I can overlook that if there were more practical effects regarding the horror. CGI horror is too cartoonish and instead of being scary, it's actually quite the opposite.

The one good thing I can take away from this is that it is a series and that does aid in the storytelling, so that's promising. Loose some of the CGI and I think it will be much more watchable.

Pretty weak start, might get better

It borrows a lot from the IT movies that came before, which makes it look cheap and tacky. These kids feel like Temu versions of the original kids. Two main boys in this episode are just knockoffs of Richie and Stanley from the original movie. The only good thing is production quality the rest is kinda "meh" and the acting is not good. It's not really scary or creepy it just feels random and considering the runtime is almost 55 minutes, the story seems slow. As a pilot it's meant to hook people and I'm personally not, but the series might get better.

Ok yeah that was intense

They really dialed "it" up for tv didn't they?! I grew up on the OG miniseries and remember the genuine dread that induced in me as a kid. Gotta say I wasn't really interested in this version but my wife has devoured SK since her youth so of course I watched it with her. Needless to say I'm impressed. STRONG outta the gate.

PG version of IT for kids

I enjoyed the two It films and while they weren't super scary, the characters and story kept you interested. The actors of both the young and older character versions were well cast. I thought Bill Skarsgård was terrific in his own interpretation of Pennywise/It. This TV series prequel to the films is the opposite. The scares so far aren't creepy or scary, very dull and PG-watered down version for kids, the cheap-looking CGI doesn't help either. The plot and characters feel so forced, dialogue is cringe. The military subplot is boring. I'm not invested in any of the characters and overall story. It's weak, hackneyed writing! And... it's already the second episode and still no glimpse of Pennywise himself. I'm not sure if I'll continue watching. I guess I do like that they used a lot of the same sets and locations they used for the It films. But I have high doubts the rest of the episodes will improve or be more of the same or worse.

Juvenile gore, bad writing, muddled plot

I love horror, especially anything that borrows from Stephen King's source material, but this is just poorly scripted, poorly researched juvenile nonsense.

It's supposed to be set in 1962, but the haircuts, set designs and slang don't accurately reflect the time period. And some of the child actors are okay, but more are abominable (although they might do better if they had decent lines to speak).

I guess it might get better in future but the plot jumps around too much for your engagement to build, plus the pacing is off. The gory car scene where IT gets introduced is obviously intended to be horrifying, but because they stretched it out over six or seven long minutes, all you feel is impatience.

This is unable to hold my attention

I gave "Welcome to Derry" a real shot, not just a casual glance, mostly because the marketing made it look like the kind of show that would crawl under your skin in the best possible way, and I figured anything carrying the legacy of Stephen King's "It" might be worth the ride. The story has been retold, revived, stretched and stitched together so many times that you start hoping someone will finally find a fresh angle that actually lands, and with this being handed the prestigious HBO slot right after the phenomenal "Task" I went in expecting something polished and unsettling. The first episode had a few moments that almost worked, the sort that should have pulled you into the darker side of town, but there was a strange hollowness to it and before long it became clear that the CGI was ruining what could have been suspense, turning scenes that should have felt eerie into something so artificial you end up laughing instead of tightening your grip on the couch.

I tried to stick with it because I could see the cast putting in the effort, especially the younger actors who clearly wanted to sell every line, but the performances never clicked and it felt like no amount of determination could save direction that simply was not connecting. James Remar, who I usually enjoy and who often adds quiet gravity to a scene, seemed oddly exaggerated here to the point where it felt like he was trapped in a different show, and the actress playing Lily never quite convinced me she belonged inside the story, because every word sounded like she was trying to remember it rather than live it.

So I stayed patient, I stayed hopeful, and I made it all the way into episode 4 before realizing I was no longer watching with interest but out of obligation, and at that point I closed it out for good. I wanted it to work, but I am done.

So far, not impressed

I will admit to start off that "IT" has never been my favorite Stephen King novel, and have found some of his others to be so much scarier. However, I did enjoy both Tim Curry's and Bill Skarsgard's renditions of Pennywise at least. This series so far, three episodes in, is pretty dull and tedious. I'm enjoying the characters of the military men but find all of the kids to be tedious and the plot very slow. There is a graveyard scene that is like something straight out of Goosebumps. What is missing are the scares. No scares. I'm disappointed and haven't enjoyed a horror series since Midnight Mass. Come on. Make another series the quality of The Haunting of Hill House or The Grudge. I'm begging you.

Been anticipating for a while it's so great and doesn't deserve hate maybe a little but it's mostly worth watching! Didn't expect horror already that was well done, unexpected great characters, smooth directing so far, and just really cool series that gets better as it goes on. I'm intrigued for more of Derry town it's glorious entertainment!

CGI from 2005?

IT: Welcome to Derry is a colossal misfire that squanders the chilling legacy of Stephen King's universe with laughably bad CGI and a glacial pace that tests even the most patient viewers. Obviously the show has just started, we're 3 episodes in, but it hasn't gotten any better episode 1 to 3. The CGI is the worst part.. It's so bad, looks cheap, old and perhaps from a cartoon more than a horror.
