Mysterious, confusing and hardly ever engaging, this short film is a tribute to the late singer/poet Belchior as evidenced by the film title which comes from a
popular song of his and somewhat is what attracted me to this piece and also the closing credits which state about this being dedicated to the man. It translates as "Last Year I Died, but this Year I Won't Die" which gives the idea of
overcoming the obstacles from the past and commit yourself to the present and future. But as story for this one we have a man losing his mind and trying to live
his old life as a married man behind in order to leave alone somewhere else where he can find some peace of mind. But his wife finds him and tries to get him back,
but by that time he's too lost within himself by hearing voices and thinking he's a famous singer from the past (Belchior in fact).
It constructs and deconstruct some bits from Belchior's life such as his disappearances in the years previous to his death, which generated a lot of buzz in the
media at the time and when he was "found" he told people he wasn't missing but he was preparing new material; and there's also some poems which reflect his nature
and way of thinking. But the movie fails to create a coherent thing, it just rambles on and on with the poor crazed man and it ends everything trying to have a
meaning when in fact it has none. It creates curiosity in seeing things unfold but it's quite empty and we are rewarded with nothing - except for a small chapter
where the man is alone in the bathroom dealing with his insanity - it's a small moment that seemed coming from a horror movie and I was intrigued by it.
A small waste of time but still a waste. 4/10.
