They had us in the first half, not gonna lie, but the last 20 minutes of this movie really turned it around. Another Day in America follows a dysfunctional office where everyone. Much like the United States, the office has a very strong Left vs Right culture. To make matters worse, everyone in the office is gossiping and constantly bad-mouthing the other employees behind their backs. The result is an office culture where everyone hates everyone, and everyone thinks the worst of everyone. Now, I'm not gonna lie. The first two-thirds of the movie is hard to watch as it is just different characters arguing back and forth. Everyone is an extremist and is really nasty to one another. It's like watching CNN and Fox News Hosts hanging out together in the worst way possible. But I didn't give up on the film, and I'm glad I didn't because, in the end, things really do come together quite nicely. I won't spoil anything, but it had a good message about what happens when we fail to see one another as human beings, and we lose our empathy. There is a big commentary on how social media has led to an increase in depression and a decrease in mental wellness. Now, I won't say that this totally makes up for the film's shortcomings. There were way too many characters for one, and the acting was a little wooden at the time. Also, the humor didn't always work, and sometimes it felt like the film was being crude just to be. However, there were some good performances. Alexis Knapp (Pitch Perfect, Project X) gives a great performance as Tracy, even if she is insufferable at times and even a hypocrite in some ways. I really love Alexis, and it's nice to see her play a character that is different than her typical role. Oliver Trevena also gives a great performance as Scott, and you really feel like he is someone who is going through a mental crisis. Scott also has the best moment in the film, which really sums up just how crazy everything feels in this online world. The rest of the cast are just okay but not terrible for an indie film. Was it a perfect film? No. But it did have a good message. Maybe we can solve every problem that society has, but we can be kinder to one another. After all, the only way things change is if we do.
