Beautiful cinematography, unsatisfying ending

I just binge-watched all the episodes and loved the beautiful and breathtaking nature as well as the cinematography. The plot was interesting and kept me engaged until the end. The actors' performances were solid, though not particularly memorable. Unfortunately, the twist at the end was somewhat unsatisfying and felt implausible.

While Turner has previously been known for tying up loose ends, this miniseries didn't quite manage that. The pacing felt rushed, and the editing prevented the story from building any real suspense. Certain scenes were predictable, and some of the minor subplots had potential but were not developed to their fullest.

I appreciated the personal stories of Turner and Vasquez, but I was left with many unanswered questions about the murder and the events that led up to it.

All in all, a solid production and time well spent-but not something I'll remember or feel the need to watch again.

Titel dA Beautiful Slow Burn That Almost Loses Its Spark

"Untamed" opens with strong potential: Eric Bana delivers a solid, grounded turn as Kyle Turner, a National Parks Service agent called to investigate a grisly death in Yosemite. Co-starring the likes of Sam Neill and Rosemarie DeWitt, the series promises a dark, atmospheric mystery set against the stunning wilderness .

What works:

The setting is compelling-a rugged backdrop that lends an eerie tension.

The cast, especially Bana, brings credibility and emotional depth.

The premise-cracking a brutal murder within a sprawling national park-sets up a strong narrative.

What slows it down:

Early episodes slog through setup, and the pacing drags noticeably. It often feels like you're "waiting for something to happen," but the payoff isn't immediate.

While the mystery has promise, there are moments where plot threads linger without clear direction, stretching the runtime thin.

In summary: "Untamed" is not bad-solid acting, moody visuals, and an intriguing thriller concept. But it's hampered by a slow burn that sometimes feels overly prolonged. If you enjoy character-driven mysteries with a dash of wilderness ambiance and don't mind a deliberate pace, it's worth a watch. Otherwise, the drag might make you wonder when things will pick up.

A fine series that occasionally feels longer than necessary.

Great Show, definitely worth checking out!

I was hooked right away and binge watched the 6 episodes without a single break, literally! I didn't realize I'd barely moved until I was done! My knees made me acutely aware though upon standing up!

Seriously though, gripping slow burn plus the landscape and cinematography is amazing of course. The mixed reviews on here so far just tells me that you will either love it or maybe not.

After watching I thought that the feeling or pull was very similar to the first season of Pickett on Prime. If you've seen that show's first season and liked it then Untamed is for you. To all readers though, I suggest watching the first episode and I guarantee you'll know whether or not it's for you by the end.

I would like to add that yes of course there are some things, just like in every show or movie, that the viewer thinks could have been better. But this was one of the best shows I've seen in a while.

(...That being expected of course with Netflix's production budget that has taken TV Shows to another atmosphere! So thanks for putting our subs to good use Netflix!)

A Solid Series

Untamed is a good watch-the stunning backdrop alone, will make it worth your while. Bana delivers an intense performance, embodying both vulnerability and strength, while Santiago adds emotional depth with her portrayal, creating a strong chemistry that will draw you into the story. It was also good to see Raoul Max Trujillo (Apocalypto). The cinematography is great, and captures the majestic landscapes, enhancing its menacing atmosphere. However, the pacing is a little off, it feels somewhat rushed, with key plot developments and character arcs lacking exploration, which will tend to leave you wanting more depth. Despite these issues, it's engaging with a blend of suspense and emotional resonance, making it captivating. Give it a shot.

Good watch

Overall this is a good short series. This is about grief more than anything, the thing everyone goes through at some point. It also gives a slight nod to what happens to people who fall through the cracks, and how easy it is to fall.

Good parts: The first two episodes are the best - it does go downhill a bit after that, but the other episodes are still pretty good. The landscape is gorgeous. The people look real - they are not fake looking, which is nice. The actors are great, all of them. Writing is good.

Bad parts: The murderer doesn't feel right. I get the point, the cracks have to be shown, and the decisions the murderer made were selfish and led to a crappy life led by the victim, who had no chance. But the whole investigation was a big "so what" at the end. Also, it's tiring, that whole renegade cop trope.

But it's very good. I cried. More than once. I recommend if you like character development and beautiful scenery. If you need some car chases, this isn't for you.

Great new series with fantastic landscapes

This review is only based on the first two episodes. Bana as always gives a good watchable performance and Neil is always solid. Also good is Santiago from the La Brea series. Beautiful landscapes though I've read it's not filmed in Yosemite where we've been to so that's a shame. It is a slow burn but so far not the least bit boring. Good mystery so far and there was a twist not related to the crime which was shocking but makes sense in the proceedings. So far the only detraction is the pining of the ex wife who obviously still cares for him but settled for some boring dude. Perhaps this will become relevant in succeeding episodes but for now the scenes just drag. Despite that at a short 6 episodes this is an easy watch. Don't let the haters of virtually just about everything except of course when it's pretentious junk ( which is the only thing they like) deter you from a good show. Try to give it a chance and you might find some great entertainment here. Highly recommended so far.

Eric Banner would have made an outstanding Joel in Last of us

Good viewing overall, strange ending but I couldn't help but get Last of us vibes from this series.

Eric Banner would have made a quality adaptation to Joel, definitely needs to be considered.

The story line was good in this series, but there were also quite a few plot holes and signs of rushed production.

The scenes are intense and suspense at times, very easy bingeworthy series, definitely needs another series but less rushed.

There were a few lines of story left open, a lot of questions unanswered but overall I enjoyed it.

This is definitely something to watch on a sunday or if you're bored.

I just finished watching it, and I have some strong opinions to share.

Avoid jumping to conclusions based solely on low ratings, as those opinions often stem from varied perspectives or unmet expectations. Having recently watched this film, I can confidently say that it is a captivating experience well worth your time. It's possible that those who rated it poorly may not have grasped the intricacies of the storyline or the depth of the characters. Every film has its unique style and subtle nuances, and sometimes, it takes a bit of patience to fully appreciate the profound message it seeks to convey. If you're in search of something that not only engages but also offers a rich and meaningful narrative, I wholeheartedly recommend this film. Trust me, you won't regret it!

Missed Potential

Six Episodes of Missed Potential

Rating: (5.5/10)

Summary: Untamed promises a tense, atmospheric crime thriller set against the stunning backdrop of Yosemite National Park - but ultimately stumbles under the weight of weak writing, cartoonish characters, and squandered potential. Despite a few solid performances, especially from Eric Bana and Sam Neill, the series never earns the emotional or narrative stakes it aims for.

Full Review: I came into Untamed expecting something right in my wheelhouse: crime, mystery, drama, all set in the gorgeous expanse of Yosemite National Park. With Eric Bana back in a lead role, alongside Sam Neill and Rosemary DeWitt, I was hoping for something rich and layered. Unfortunately, the series just doesn't deliver. The first episode starts strong - two climbers stumble upon a body, setting off a chain of investigation - but from there, things unravel.

The characters often feel paper-thin or cartoonish. Bana's Carl Turner has almost no inner life, and his dynamic with Lily Santiago's sidekick character, Naya, is reduced to the same joke repeated endlessly. Rosemary DeWitt's ex-wife role feels shoehorned in, adding little beyond forced drama. Characters swing wildly in behavior from one scene to the next, and it's hard to get attached when motivations shift purely to create artificial tension.

As the investigation unfolds, major plot turns rely heavily on coincidence or characters just happening to talk to the right person by chance. A ridiculous example is a scene where someone falls down a mineshaft - instead of climbing back up (which visually, they clearly could), they panic and pretend to be stuck, generating fake suspense. And time after time, someone miraculously shows up to save the day. There's also the strange editing, which constantly bounces between face shots, wide shots, and quick cuts, undercutting emotional moments and making deep conversations feel weightless.

One of the most frustrating parts of Untamed is how the final episode handles the resolution - or rather, fumbles it. By episode five, the main mystery is essentially wrapped up, but instead of ending with a satisfying close, episode six feels like an unnecessary epilogue tacked on to stretch the runtime. Characters behave out of sync with how they've been written all series; there's a final twist that comes out of nowhere, feeling unearned because there were no earlier hints or layered performances to justify it. Even worse, a major character death happens with almost no consequence - no investigation, no fallout, just... silence. For a show supposedly rooted in grief, loss, and healing, this lands awkwardly flat. The final moments, meant to symbolize Carl moving on from his son Caleb's death, feel rushed and emotionally thin, because the series only ever sporadically engaged with that core trauma. Instead of a hard-hitting conclusion, we're left with a deflated, shrugging end to a story that had the potential to deliver much more.

The Yosemite setting, meanwhile, is a total missed opportunity. Instead of making the landscape feel like a character, as True Detective or The Revenant did so well, most of the show feels shot on obvious sets. Scenes meant to feel rugged or wild - like a camp of off-the-grid survivalists - come off staged and fake. Social commentary, like the treatment of Native American characters or addiction themes, is handled with the same clumsiness, bringing nothing fresh or thoughtful to the table.

In the end, Untamed isn't an outright disaster, but it's deeply frustrating. There's a version of this show that could have been thoughtful, moody, and emotionally sharp - but this isn't it. If you're just looking for background noise, it's passable. But if you were hoping for something with the atmosphere of Yellowstone or the layered grit of True Detective, you'll likely come away disappointed.

Solid Whodunnit

I binge-watched Untamed and recommended it to friends. Yes, it was cheesy and unrealistic at times-but still an engaging watch with lots of moving parts.

I love a good whodunnit and enjoyed trying to piece things together along the way. Some twists genuinely threw me off, which kept it interesting. The acting was good, and I appreciated that the show didn't leave me hanging-unlike other series that end with vague interpretations. This one tied up the loose ends and gave me closure, which I loved.

Overall, it's worth watching!

Dull Murder Mystery Set in Not-Yosemite

First, I spent most of my life just two hours from Yosemite, going there at least once a year as long as I can remember. That is not Yosemite. Sure, the production sent a cameraman there to film some establishing shots. But as a Boy Scout who has hiked all over that park for years and could walk the park blindfolded, it's incredibly obvious that it's really filmed in Vancouver, BC. There's so much wrong with the park's portrayal I won't go into. But if you're going to set a series in an iconic world-renowned location you need to get some of the details right. And really, at that point why not just set the series in either generic unnamed Yosemite-like area or just make up a fictional park. Probably the only detail I appreciated was that the murdered girl was from my hometown of Merced.

Other than that, it's just a forgettable cliched murder mystery. There's nothing setting it apart from the hundreds of other murder mysteries coming out. Mysterious body, personal tragedies that somehow tie into it, new mysteries uncovered, main characters secretly involved. All the usual stuff that has become overused by now. I correctly guessed who was in on it by the end of the first episode, it's so predictable.

The dialogue is dull and stilted. I saw one review accusing the show of being written by AI. I don't know about that, but it certainly feels that way. There's good actors but they seem to have trouble bringing this stuff to life.

As I said, there's good actors in the show. But, as Stephen King said, you can't polish a turd. Eric Bana and Sam Neill have done amazing work, but even they can't get this off the ground. Kyle is stoic to the point of lifeless. It never once seemed like Kyle and Jill were once exes who loved each other. Vasquez is every Hallmark movie cliche about a woman who leaves her husband rolled into one. Everything with her ex-husband with cliched to the point of cringe-inducing. The relationship between Kyle and Vasquez is the same exact thing every other movie/show has done between the tired veteran and overeager rookie.

I will give the series some credit. The mystery stuff is okay if you don't mind the overused story and wooden characters. The British Columbian scenery is shot beautifully. I won't remember the series a week from now but it's a somewhat decent way to spend a few hours.

Lacks Creative Energy

In its setup and characterizations it's a fairly typical streaming cop show with influences of Nordic noir. The main character is brooding, everyone is dealing with secrets and past trauma, and there's a tone of casual nihilistic brutality. The national park scenery is nice, the cast is fine and the pace is reasonably brisk.

It has most of the elements to be compelling but the execution lacks the creative energy needed to make the show as engaging as it should be. The story is formulaic and the characters feel like unadorned cliches. The narrative doesn't generate much momentum because the direction is plodding and the script telegraphs its reveals too early. By the halfway point, finishing the series seemed more like a chore than anything. The finale isn't inventive or shocking enough to salvage the middling setup that preceded it.

The scenery steals the show

In 2016 I fulfilled one of my life's dreams and I stayed 2 nights in Yosemite park, at the Ahwahnee Lodge. From this point of view the series is a true reward. The plot is a different thing. At the end you can't help but ask yourself what was the core story to begin with: the Caleb story, the Lucy story, the drug subplot... The problem with convoluted plots is that they get too twisty for their own good, and as a screenwriter and novelist myself I know what I'm talking about. The main character, a federal agent in charge of crime investigations in national parks, never connects with the viewer, or with other characters for that matter; not once he allows himself to even grin, never. His detachment from everything, except from his obsession to solve Lucy's death, puts us off from his emotional core as a human being. We care more about Vasquez, a normal person, or even Jill, his ex wife. Main characters don't need to be too complex or traumatized to be interesting, especially if they have to solve complex crimes. What about just doing their job in a professional and efficient way without spending too much time brooding? Direction is functional, acting won't earn them any awards, writing wants to be clever sometimes, and there are even some magic realism touches. All in all is a quite pleasant series to watch, but 4 episodes might have done it just as well. 7/10.

Fantastic show

This was a wild ride, and I was immediately drawn into it from episode one to an unexpected streaming binge that I am so glad I decided to dive in and go with flow on. This is a fantastic series with great actors and a compelling storyline paired with breathtaking scenery, and shockingly unexpected twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time!

Eric delivers an incredible performance in this movie and the layers of family and nuance incorporated into the series makes it a heartwrenching watch, but nevertheless a very enjoyable suspense series for those who appreciate rugged outdoors tales.

Kinda like lifetime movie.

A mediocre drama in the genre of Virgin River.

Supposedly set in Yosemite National park it revolves around a death of a young girl. The story meanders, involving drug dealers, squatters and various shady characters. First of all it is not filmed in Yosemite and old abandoned mines would not contain drug labs. Squatters could not possibly live in the park and drunk park employees would not be tolerated. Again a story of inept police and ranger investigators stumbling around the park finding errant bullets in tree trunks in thousands of acres of trees. Just take this for what it is, a lifetime like series.

Another series with great cast wasted by weak writing.

I can't explain the dozens of mediocre to poor stories in scripted series other than that writers are using AI to create them.

This is a show with so many cliches and Deus ex machina moments that it cannot be saved from the stellar cast and amazing locations.

The characters are not well developed, the whodunnit sucks, some things are just repetitive, the story quite often does not make any sense, plot armor ends being frustrating, and the plot twists are awful and very much telegraphed.

Like when the hero is supposed to have solved the mysteries, but there are 30 more minutes for the finale.

4 stars for the actors and the scenery.
