While I had indeed never even heard about this 2024 Malaysian thriller titled "Lubuk", from director Lee See Teck Mark, prior to stumbling upon it by random chance here in 2024, of course I opted to give the movie a fair chance. The fact that it was an Asian movie that I hadn't already seen was more than sufficient to make me watch the movie.
I had virtually no idea what I was in for here, aside from what little information the synopsis provided, so director Lee See Teck Mark had every opportunity to entertain me.
The storyline in the movie proved entertaining. It was a well-written storyline, so writers Lee See Teck Mark and Yen Yen Tang fared quite well in their endeavor. I was genuinely entertained throughout the course of the 85 minutes that the movie ran for.
Given my limited exposure to the Malaysian cinema, then I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble. And that was actually something that spoke well in favor of the movie, as I do enjoy watching new and unfamiliar talents on the screen whenever I sit down to watch a movie. The acting performances were good.
"Lubuk" proved to be a nice surprise of a movie, and definitely one of the better Malaysian movies I've seen; not that I've seen an overwhelming amount of Malaysian movies, mind you.
But if you enjoy a thriller with light horror elements, and have a fondness of Asian cinema, then by all means give "Lubuk" a chance. I genuinely enjoyed it.
My rating of director Lee See Teck Mark's 2024 movie "Lubuk" lands on a six out of ten stars.
