Regretting You

Honest conversations could have prevented much regret.

Regretting You is a new romantic drama directed by Josh Boone, the director of The Fault in Our Stars and The New Mutants. The film is based on the novel of the same name by author Colleen Hoover.

Morgan (Allison Williams) became a mother at a young age to her daughter Clara (Mckenna Grace), together with her partner Chris (Scott Eastwood). Their relationship is often tense, and when Chris passes away, things only get worse.

When Morgan's sister Jenny (Willa Fitzgerald) also dies, Jonah (Dave Franco) - Jenny's partner - and Morgan try to navigate this period of grief and loss together while supporting their children. During these difficult times, they learn more about each other and about their deceased partners than they ever expected.

Because the film tries to quickly introduce the four friends - two couples - it can be hard to follow everything clearly. In addition, some events come across as somewhat implausible, as if they would fit better in a teenage drama, even though the story revolves around older characters.

These unclear and unrealistic elements sometimes make the film feel a bit tedious. For a film running nearly two hours, the screenwriter seems to have paid insufficient attention to the development of all the characters, making the whole feel somewhat unbalanced. Some questions raised by the story remain unanswered, making certain plotlines feel unnecessary.

The title of the film, referring to the regret over certain people or choices, could have been more impactful if the characters had more honest conversations and behaved in a more mature way.

Because of the unclear and implausible aspects of the story, the cast members don't always get the chance to shine. Most do their best with the material they're given, but many have delivered stronger performances in better-written films.

Fantastic and horrible

This is one of those films, that are impossible to rate. I want to give it a 1/10 and a 10/10 at the same time.

The film plays on so many notes and crams in so much plot, that no character development I believable. The result is a superficial and pretentious piece of overly sentimental work. Nothing works in this film, the way the filmmakers intend it to. But that's why I loved it so much. I haven't laughed so hard since watching Apartment 1303 - a horror film that does the exact same thing as this film. Just watch how a caricatured Dave Franco goes from the largest and most unbelievable smile to a very serious face while physically proclaiming his love for another person in a scene where everything is off.

Yes - this film is so bad it's good. And it keeps going hard from start to finish. Almost every scene is a laugh riot, and I seriously can't wait rewatching it with a couple of friends.

For Anyone Who Loves a Cry, a Hug, and a Pretty Frame

Okay, full disclosure: I know full well I'm so biased on this one, but I really enjoyed 'Regretting You'. From the moment the first frame rolled I was drawn in - visually it's gorgeous, the leads are absolutely stunning, and yes, my heartstrings were tugged. Any film that gets a tear out of me instantly gets a higher rating in my book, haha.

I'll admit: I've read the book (by Colleen Hoover) so there was extra nostalgia and expectation baked in. The film adaptation doesn't always dig as deep as one might hope - some character arcs feel glossed over, some of the emotional beats just skim the surface. Critics have flagged uneven storytelling and tonal whiplash. But honestly? For me it didn't matter, because what it does deliver is warm, cute, and full of heart.

If you're after a perfect chick-flick with a lot of heart, this is your match. The daughter-mother dynamics, the romance, the grief, the scenic backdrops - it comes together into something that's far from perfect, but deeply enjoyable. Sure, it could've been deeper, but sometimes you just want to be moved, to smile, to sniffle, to leave the cinema feeling something. And that's exactly what I got.

A movie for teenage girls?

This movie tried to be touching but was almost silly to me. A family tragedy upends the lives of a mother and her teenage daughter. The lack of communication around this event seemed very unrealistic. The smart daughter is somehow oblivious to what most is upsetting to her mother. Meanwhile, potential romances develop for both. Perhaps this was the appeal to the audience. Other than my party of four age 60s folks, the other 25 or so viewers appeared to be all teenage or college girls. And some clapped at the end -- while I shook my head. I've not read any Colleen Hoover works, but will not be attending any more movies from her novels.

Early Naughties Drama

After the tragic passing of her aunt and dad, Clara is in a dark place and it seems her only source of light is a boy named Miller. Clara's mom Morgan is distraught especially when things are not what they seem in the accident. Her sisters boyfriend Jonah has some secrets himself. It's all about to come crashing down on everyone.

It's a decent romcom / romdrama. All the acting is good it caries some good jokes and some nice moments. The overall situation is a bit bananas but it's a movie.

I liked the 2 lead kids, strong acting chops they both have, funny, sad, moving, hopeful. The pacing was good took about 30 minutes for things to kick off and ramps up to the end. I liked it for a genre that's not rally for me 6/10.

Cool concept, poor execution

I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to... I loved the actors and the acting, the screenplay and cinematography was stunning, but the direction and editing seemed so off and choppy. There was no flow or depth to the movie despite the base plot being deep and filled with emotion.

I didn't read the book, but oh well, this movie makes me never wanna read it... My rating is for the cast and not the movie really...

Piece of garbage

There is absolutely nothing in this movie that hits home or feels genuine. The story drags without any real emotional depth, and the characters feel completely flat. It tries hard to be meaningful but ends up being dull and disconnected. I don't understand why they made this movie. Totally disappointing and a complete waste of time.

Predictable and surprisingly unemotional

Was McKenna Grace up to the task of starring in Regretting You, a film based on the Colleen Hoover novel? I have to say no, unless you like your family dramas to feel like just another movie-of-the-weak, pun intended. The film, whose themes are loss, betrayal and grief, fails to wring any true emotional reaction from the audience. When you're looking forward to the appearance of co-stars Lexie (Sam Morelos) and Efren (Ethan Costanilla), more than the scenes between stars Allison Williams as Morgan Grant and Dave Franco as Jonah Sullivan, your film might be in trouble.

Each actor seems to just bounce back from tragic, unexpected losses of a husband, sister, wife-to-be, best friend. Each display some deep well of acceptance that doesn't seem reality-based. It's as if everyone in the story is afraid to be angry. Perhaps that's because for 17 years, both Morgan and Jonah have ghost-walked through the roles they thought they were assigned - long suffering, just be nice, don't rock the boat. That's part of the twist, so I won't reveal it here.

As Miller Adams, the young man who wins the heart of Clara Grant (Grace), I appreciated Mason Thames' attempts to pull a human reaction out of Clara. The scenes which included Grace and Clancy Brown as Hank, Adam's ailing grandfather, were also well-meant and temporarily elevated the movie. However, it soon sunk back into mundanity. Clara Grant's dad is dead, as is Morgan Grant's husband, yet neither of the women seem to exhibit depression or anger. Apparently the well-documented Kubler-Ross five stages of grief were not included in the script. When the highest form of grief a parent reaches is grounding their kid, I'd say the might merit a visit from a social worker, a discussion with the school counselor, at the very least.

Did I hate Regretting You? No. It is simply unremarkable. Hoovers most recent book-to-screen adaption of It Ends With Us, which dealt with themes of conflict and spousal abuse, was infinitely more watchable.

A 2000s dramedy with a modern twist and a brilliant McKenna Grace.

What could have been just another generic adaptation of Colleen Hoover's novel becomes a film with its own identity, supported by good performances and confident direction. Mckenna Grace is the standout, delivering a magnetic performance that elevates the material and makes the audience connect with her journey.

Regretting You is, above all, a film about new beginnings. Even if it doesn't explore the full depth of its drama, it wins you over with its emotional honesty and the way it transforms pain into learning. It's a romance that moves, entertains, and proves that sometimes lightness can be as powerful as suffering.

Massive swing and miss

A film that was suppose to surprise and shock you, pull on your heart strings and make you feel good at the end fails miserably. I couldn't connect and feel for the characters even McKenna Grace's 'Clare' role (and I think she's a stellar actress) but even she couldn't save the film. There's a lot of negative energy in this film for the wrong reasons, poor story telling, and lack of connection delivery. I finished the film rolling my eyes a bit and wanting the film to finish already. As someone who appreciates a good rom com or romantic drama film such as The Notebook, this was not it. I give it 2 stars for the attempt, but just an overall awful execution and story. A forgettable film.

Regret Choosing RY

The best thing about this film was the theater. Huge barn with ten patrons. I sat shoeless in a recliner chair with a heat button, which will be great this winter. I'm already sick of the male lead Mason Thames. He is in everything and reminds me of a muppet. Allison Williams is a lousy actress. McKenna Grace is obviously a future star biding her time. The supporting characters were interesting, especially Clancy Brown as Hank. Nothing made much sense. The mother/daughter grief period lasted about thirty seconds. You know exactly how Mason and McKenna will end up. I'd seen the trailer ten times and really just wanted to lounge for two and a half hours, when you factor in the 25 minute song and dance before the movie. So the good news is that I discovered a new favorite theater. I'd see subpar films there just to hang out. I just don't want anything this bad. Scenes were so bad that I was howling with laughter and talking to myself. It sounds like Colleen Hoover's It Ends With Us was much better. I saw the wrong CH film. This is one rich woman.

So underrated

This is clearly an underrated movie. Rotten Tomatoes only gave it 33%, but personally, I'd rate it much higher. It's a film that has everything romance, drama, and comedy all in one. And honestly, it feels so heartwarming. To be fair, the plot is a bit of a cheat you can tell from the start that it's going to be emotional, but the way it mixes in comedy is just perfect. This movie is amazing. Don't miss it, and don't let the critic scores fool you.

Visually stunning but emotionally empty.

I was really looking forward to this film, but it turned out to be a complete disappointment.

Let's start with the downsides: the script feels raw and uneven, as if it were pieced together from two different stories. There's no chemistry between the characters, so the emotional core just doesn't land. At times, the drama slips into almost "Indian soap opera" territory with overly melodramatic twists. The direction is weak - lacking a clear tone and rhythm.

On the positive side, the film looks beautiful: stunning visuals, gorgeous locations, and a strong cast. Allison and Willa, as always, bring charm and depth to their roles - as much as the material allows.

Overall, it's the kind of movie that works as background viewing, especially if you're not expecting any real emotional catharsis.

Great not sure why this had an RPX option!

McKenna Grace is absolutely stunning nowadays she was so good in this and the acting was so great! I saw mid afternoon on Halloween that was nice not many were there. Some of this was cheesy but nice entertainment. A lot of drama I didn't expect that; Regretting You was so nice for what it was I would understand any opinions.

Think "Cheesy Hallmark movie with better actors"

A great cast of actors, blended with a mediocre plot. Cheesy, similar to a Hallmark movie. It started out sort of okay and got cheesier and slightly more predictable as it went on. The only bright spots were a strong cast and a couple of funny lines sprinkled throughout. To be blunt, the best parts of the movie were my 2 restroom breaks when I got to leave the theater for a few minutes.

A feel good movie perfect for the season.

Regretting You is everything you'd expect from this genre - and from this author. It's cheesy at times, emotional, dramatic, and heartwarming - the perfect kind of popcorn movie for the season. It'll make you feel warm, cozy, and simply happy - just an overall good time.

What truly elevates it is the cast, especially Mckenna Grace and Mason Thames, who shine with such authenticity and charm. Both are clearly on the path to future Oscar glory, with incredibly bright careers ahead.

When Love and Loss Collide - A Tender Family Drama with Modern Realism

Regretting You (2025), directed by Josh Boone and based on Colleen Hoover's 2019 bestselling novel, is a touching exploration of love, betrayal, and the fragile threads that hold a family together. Adapted for the screen by Susan McMartin, the film blends emotional storytelling with a modern-day sensibility that feels both nostalgic and timely.

At its heart lies the strained relationship between Morgan Grant (Allison Williams) and her teenage daughter Clara (Mckenna Grace), whose lives are shattered by a devastating accident that uncovers painful family secrets. What follows is not merely a story of grief, but of rediscovery - of self, of love, and of the people we thought we knew.

Josh Boone, known for his delicate handling of human emotions (The Fault in Our Stars), brings a similar sensitivity here. The direction feels intimate and restrained, allowing the emotional moments to breathe. The cinematography beautifully captures the quiet melancholy of suburban life, while the editing ensures a smooth narrative rhythm between past and present. The background score, though understated, complements the film's bittersweet tone without overpowering the emotions.

Performance-wise, Mckenna Grace delivers a standout turn - mature, raw, and at times unrecognisable from her earlier roles, including her uptight brilliance in Young Sheldon. Allison Williams brings quiet strength to Morgan's emotional turmoil, and the supporting cast, including Dave Franco and Scott Eastwood, add depth to the interwoven relationships.

While the romantic flashbacks of the early 2000s evoke a sense of déjà vu - love stories that feel like "old wine in a new bottle" - the film's strength lies in how it reframes those sentiments for the 21st-century family, where perfection is a myth and resilience is the real romance.

Ultimately, Regretting You succeeds as a poignant family drama that doesn't shy away from imperfections. It's about learning to love again - not despite the odds, but because of them.

Rating: 7/10 - A heartfelt modern romance with emotional depth, graceful performances, and a quietly moving core.

Had high hopes, but it was a hot mess

I really wanted to like this movie - I had high hopes. But the story is all over the place. It jumps between different storylines with no real flow, and none of it makes sense. It honestly feels like the director wanted to say something emotional but had no idea how, so they just mixed everything together into a mess.

The two young leads were great, but everything else fell flat.

As an Asian viewer, it was especially disappointing that the Asian male character was written as a complete stereotype. It feels like he was included just for the sake of diversity, instead of being treated like a real person. If you can't write, then don't write.

Heavy Editing/Rush May Have You Regretting This Movie

LIKES: Poetic At Times Cute Humor Heartfelt Moments Good Material Presentation Acting Is Good At Times Pacing Is Entertaining DISLIKES: Plot Is Predictable Too Much Seems Cut/Edited Lacks The Full Hollywood Magic Feels A Bit Empty Compared To Other Love Elements The Impasses Are Mediocre Summary: Hoover's books have become like the new Nicholas Sparks, finding sanctuary in tragedy as she crafts narratives that address some of the most unique senses of humanity. And in her own way, Hoover has made a poetic love letter that incorporates the theme of bright rays capable of breaking through he dark in the hopes of healing. The movie has decent visual direction, but thrives in the writing and narrative to convey its messages that I think we all need. It's got the classic elements of a dramatic romance where one of the leads fulfills those fantasies in those endearing ways that make hearts swoon. And while it can be cheesy, I liked this movie, not becoming too wrapped up to become another far-fetched love tale that we have plenty of. Instead, Regretting you feels a bit more realistic, the presentation grounded in authentic portrayals that feel endearing, authentic, and heartfelt to the levels I can appreciate. They don't feel too fake or hidden behind some lothario, but rather, I was able to resonate with some of the characters and feel a spark of appreciation for their efforts. And the humor feels well-paired with the awkward banter and cute fumbles of the cast, or a well-timed joke by the best friend that felt exceptionally delivered. It all works at an entertaining pace, moving toward the end at a brisk enough pace to not drag and cutting through the two hours. However, it is the acting I think this movie relies heavily on bringing to life, and for much of it, I can say it does things well. Williams is quirky, this odd blend of awkward humor and overdramatic parenting meshing decently together, especially during those growing moments. She does sort of stray from her quality a few times, but for the most part, she does okay. Franco is fine as well. I found him the most consistent of the group, funny and dramatic in equal parts, which holds some charm that I think most will find complex, even when he fails to fully hit those dramatic cues. To no surprise, I think Grace gets the win for me for the best acting in this film. Her talent shines well in this film, with many scenes having this balance of mood, sassiness, and emotion that makes me enthralled to watch her character face these ordeals. She helps make some of the material really speak out, and I perceive her character will be relevant to many with her solid performance. Overall, the movie handles this material in a manner that will appease the ideal target audience in terms of drama and romance lovers.

However, the movie does have some fundamental errors for me that I think are pulling the score down for other reviewers. The plot is predictable, some of which is to blame on the trailers giving too much away in their showings. Without reading the book, I was able to predict a lot of the actions, and I can't say that it helped the movie in any way. What I also cannot validate is how accurate this film adaptation is, or if it matched the emotional intensity and presentation of the book, but from my other dislikes, I would say it doesn't reach such heights. Regretting You feels like there are elements missing, some of that Hollywood wow factor that I've seen in other films from the drama/romance genres that I think it needed. I also needed more conflict and impasse, something I think would have added a bit more excitement to this film and spiced things up to be more entertaining. No, I didn't want a Soap Opera, but I felt the characters didn't have to work that hard to get over some pretty wild betrayals that began this plot. I needed more conversation, more trials to grow, and not a sudden switch flip to make things better. As sweet as it is, it just lacks elements that feel believable, and also feels rushed with several details perhaps lost to the editing room's clips. It does the job, but I felt there was more to be addressed, more growth and heat that felt too dialed back for the sake of time. In addition, the delivery is uneven, and I found the romantic parts not believable between the cast. Some of the big moments felt bland, rushed, and again just flat, a surprise given the talent of this cast, and I wanted a little more than they gave us.

The VERDICT: Regretting You is a fine installment in the drama and romance movie department, but that's just it...it's fine. The performances are okay, with Grace taking the lead, but the film gets points for being cute, charming, and easy to watch despite the hardships the characters face. Hoover's writing translates decently in terms of the lessons I think she was trying to teach, and I enjoyed that there was a more realistic approach to facing such a tragedy compared to other films in this genre. With some humorous elements to cut through the darkness, and a bit of an adorable romance approach, this movie should be entertaining to the primary audience who loves a sob story. Does it reach the full potential, though? I don't think so. To fit into the time constraints, the film seems to have taken cuts, but without reading the book, I cannot accurately state how well it matches the book. I suspect it is lacking some key story elements, primarily some more heated moments to challenge our characters so that the resolution doesn't feel so instant and predictable. Regretting You's film adaptation needs a little more heat in the romance department as well, rather than just some clips hastily edited in of kissing and censored sex. The result of this movie for me is an okay film, but it could have done more to make that cinematic spectacle I think they were gunning to make. I think you optimize your money and time at home for this one, but a friend's night out feels like a welcome group to go see a movie. My scores are: Drama/Romance: 6.5 Movie Overall: 5.5-6.0.
