The Power of Sports for Amputees

This thoughtful, well-made film addresses many aspects of limb loss with clarity. Marci Krown skillfully weaves into a meaningful work of art, stories of accomplished athletes with people who have had a positive impact on their lives. The critical role of family, friends, coaches and the scientific community in facing the challenges and celebrating the success of an amputee is a powerful theme of the film. The educational significance of The Power of Sports for Amputees cannot be overstated. Accordingly, including it in the national K-12 curriculum would have a profound, positive societal impact.

As an amputee myself I sometimes found myself thinking "well yeah, obviously" to much of what was discussed in the film. But I reminded myself that for someone who isn't an amputee or isn't close to one this could all be new information! I'd love to see non adaptive athletes get inspired by the athletes featured in the movie. Being an adaptive athlete may require some different equipment or creative thinking but it's entirely possible. I'd also like to see more focus on the mental health aspects of sports and exercise in general. Physical activity is such an essential part of emotional well being.

Any amputee or person living or working with an amputee should see this film. Experiencing a limb loss is a very difficult situation for amputees and their families. There is a very complex network of healthcare providers and payers that need to be negotiated. The Power of Sports for Amputees covers all these questions and more that any amputee or anyone associated with an amputee should have knowledge, including, how prosthetics are fitted, the physical and psychological challenges amputees and their loved one endure, the importance of sports for amputees. Most importantly it gives information about how to overcome the challenges of limb loss.

This documentary is not just for the sports minded amputee! It is as informative as it is inspirational. There is such a wide variety of experts and athletes in this well thought out movie. I wish i had a notepad and a pen because thier were so many helpful tips and info on organizations that i was not aware of. Come ready to learn and be inspired by those amputees who pressed through to become thier best selves! Every coach and trainer should see this film in preparation of working with any student who comes to them saying "i know i can do this in spite of my physical challenge!" It is impressive what the power of sports can do for all of us!

I loved the entire movie. The amputee athletes presented very honest reports on what happened and how they overcame their obstacles. The importance of the support of their coaches, parents, peer visitors, prosthetists and physical therapists was emphasized. The emotional benefits of participating are highlighted. This movie is perfect for the amputee athlete interested in competitive sports. Contacts for further resources are given. Loved the resources mentioned for college level sports.

The next movie I would love to see would be one that targets pediatric amputees and how to get them involved. I have watched young kids participate in wheelchair basketball and see many benefits to the kids, their parents, and their able bodied friends.

I would also love to see a movie targeted at older amputees, or those that just want to be more a part of a community and just participate, rather than be competitive athletes.

This movie was a great start. I am beyond excited to see the progress made over the past 40 years in the world of amputee sports.

Congrats to the producers. I loved every minute of the movie and highly recommend it to both the amputees and the able bodied athletes. Learning on both sides is helpful.
