The film starts brilliantly with a banger intro sequence for the one and only Thalaivar. The buildup is solid and not overdosed like in other mass commercials for Rajini sir's films. The intro fight was shot stylishly with the help of the Mocobot camera. The background score, on the other hand, was simply superb. Perfect remix of the songs and well balanced in terms of the mass stature of Rajini sir.
Mainly, the film is content-oriented and doesn't deviate because of the star value of Rajini. Encounters are what they deal with in the film and they balanced it out properly in the first half. The staging was good and the mood of the film was good. This investigation crime thriller deals with topics such as encounters and murder-rape cases in the first half. The TJ Gnanavel touch is obviously present in the movie but it doesn't effectively do the same as his previous venture, Jai Bhim. The need for showing the lockup torture scenes in Jai Bhim was necessary for the film but the murder-rape scene in Vettaiyan was shown brutally and there was no need for such amount of violence in that part. But the main issue is the repeated showcase of the same scene which was used a LOT of times. The edit could've been a lot better in that part.
The screenplay is fast-paced, and the edit was done very well in that aspect. The background score supported the film as a backbone but it was sometimes scored over-exaggeratedly. However, it is not a major drawback since the investigation thriller mood is elevated more by Anirudh's subtle composition.
Amitabh sir plays a former Judge in the film. But, his character doesn't impact the story in any terms. Even Prakash Raj could've easily played that character with ease and it may have been more effective.
Rajini sir plays as the character itself, importantly. TJ Gnanavel made sure not to ruin the movie's mood with mass scenes for Rajini. Yes, there are few mass scenes like we see in his other movies but it is underplayed very well which is what is needed for the film and the director extracted it very well from Rajini sir. But in terms of emotional acting, his acting felt weak, especially in a death scene and a scene that displays the guilt of the character.
Meanwhile, Fahadh Faasil just stole the show easily. He plays every character with such ease and it is unimaginable for us to imagine any other actor for the performances he does. His character was wonderfully written and his scenes with Rajini sir are such a Delight to watch. His character travels until the end and it isn't wasted like the so-called cameos nowadays.
As much as I call the first half solid and fast-paced, the audience can predict the upcoming scenes. But it is not a drawback because of the packed screenplay. The first half ends with a proper interval, unlike the usual intervals left in big star films. This purely showcased the importance for the story than the star. The story is not compromised for the star at any instance.
The first act is written very well, but from the middle of the second act, it starts to suffer. When the story tries to deal with the encounters and murder-rape cases, a subplot starts to make things messier. EDUCATION SCAM.
An issue like EDUCATION SCAM requires an entire film since it is a very sensitive and huge topic. As the director starts to blend this subplot with the current story, the screenplay starts to drag and becomes mediocre halfway through.
In the second half, there is an action sequence in the subway which is unnecessary and slightly spoils the flow. On such a serious note, unwanted comic reliefs are stuffed, and it feels very generic. For instance, there is a scene where Rajini tells a goon, "Pondattinga ennakida Purushan pecha keturukanga". The audience can connect with the line but, it just makes the story unfocused and unserious. There are a lot of moments where the comic instances make the story unserious.
The villain is introduced only in the second act and the character makes the film weaker. Again, like the usual villains, he's a corporate villain, and he's only here to make the film even more pathetic. Easily, the film had more ideas to go into a simple issue which was staged already but no. Since the director is only focused on delivering a social message story; he fails to infuse the issue properly with the story.
The second half actively is saved only by Anirudh's excellent score. The third act just suffers more with a poor climax setup and it ends with a disappointing note and fails to make any impact like the first half.
One of the positives of the film is, that every actor is utilized properly, but only Manju Warrier's character had no scope for the story. They did keep a mass scene for her but again, unnecessary.
In the end, Rajini sir says, "Police are not hunters, we are protectors". This is what the film primarily focuses on and it could've gone in the same way to prove the quote Rajini sir says. A subplot like an Education Scam felt unnecessary in order to prove that Encounters are not the only solution where crimes take place. Only if the writing was focused on that note this could've easily become the best script Thalaivar chose recently. But, kudos to Rajini sir for picking such a script for the commercial value he has. Because, nowadays, big stars don't choose purely content-oriented films with messages. They choose action entertainers, which are completely filled with over-the-top action sequences and unwanted dance numbers. The guts of Rajini sir to pick such a strong subject is appreciated very much. TJ Gnanavel should come back with a stronger script next time with the movie he has with Suriya, once again. EXCITED FOR THAT.
Overall, this film is a decently written movie that isn't compromised by the star's value. As much as I am able to criticize the film's second half, it is not a bad movie at all. Definitely watchable once and the director effortlessly blended the mass moments with the story. Hats off to him in that aspect. "The story is the king and it always has been" just like James Gunn said. The film suffered in its second half with multiple subplots but it is fairly engaging until the climax for sure. The cinematography is good enough for the story and it elevates the mass moments most of the time. Anirudh did a tremendous job in this movie. The best work of his in recent times.
MY RATING: 7/10
FINAL VERDICT: Definitely recommended for Thalaivar fans and especially recommended for FaFa's performance. Family audiences can enjoy the film and it is one time watchable in that aspect. But, it won't satisfy you if you expect a Jailer for Rajini sir or a Jai Bhim for TJ Gnanavel sir.

THE FIRST ACT FELT REALLY DRAGGY. THE WEAK WRITING IS REALLY VISIBLE. PACING IS A REAL PROBLEM IN THIS FILM. ACTING IS VERY MEDIOCRE. MY FAVOURITE ROBERT PATTINSON WHO ROCKED AS CEDRIC AND BATMAN COMPLETELY SHOCKED ME WITH HIS NOT SO CAPTIVATING PERFORMANCE. THE FEMALE LEAD ALONG WITH OTHER ACTORS ALSO DIDN'T ENTERTAIN ME WITH THEIR ACTING. THE CHEMISTRY BETWEEN TWO LEADS WORKS AT SOMETIMES BUT MOSTLY DOESN'T.
THE SECOND ACT SLIGHTLY PICKS UP BUT IT DOESN'T SEEM TO HEAD TOWARDS ANY DIRECTION. WE GET A DECENT THIRD ACT AND AGAIN, THE NARRATION FELT WEAKER. THE CINEMATOGRAPHY WAS ANNOYING AT FIRST WITH REALLY SHAKY CAMERA MOVEMENTS BUT ANYWAYS, THEY KEPT US VISUALLY CAPTIVATED WITH THE SCENARIES SOMETIMES. THE MUSIC IS GOOD SOMETIMES AND BAD SOMETIMES. IT DOESN'T ELEVATE ANY SCENES MOSTLY.
OVERALL, IT IS A TIMEPASSING FILM WHICH DOESN'T KEEP YOU ENGAGED ALL THE TIMES BUT A DECENT FLICK.
MY RATING: 5.5/10
FINAL VERDICT: STRICTLY RECOMMENDED ONLY FOR TIMEPASS.

THE EXPECTATIONS BEFORE WATCHING THIS SHOW IS QUITE HIGH FOR SURE. DOES SEASON 01 SATISFY YOU? YES, IT DOES BUT ONLY TO SOME EXTENT. THIS SEASON HAS SOME REALLY GOOD WOW MOMENTS BUT THE STORY TAKES ITS TIME TO ENTERTAIN YOU. A VERY GOOD PILOT EPISODE AND A PRETTY DECENT NEXT FOUR EPISODES. THE STORY DEALS MUCH MORE WITH THE RELATIONSHIP OF WALTER WHITE CHARACTER WITH HIS FAMILY. DEFINITELY, THAT'S THE REASON WHY THE EPISODES FEEL A LITTLE LESS ENTERTAINING AND SLIGHTLY DRAGGY. BUT THEY DO GIVE US REALLY GOOD HEART-TO-HEART CONVERSATIONS WITH THE FAMILY CHARACTERS. IT'S VERY WELL DONE, ESPECIALLY, BRYAN CRANSTON AS WALTER WHITE, IS JUST TOO GOOD WITH HIS ACTING. HIS PERFORMANCE FELT SO REALISTIC AND VERY WELL DONE. ACCOMPANIED BY AARON PAUL AS JESSE PINKMAN. HE'S GOOD AS WELL AND SOMETIMES FUNNY.
MUSIC IS DECENT. THE CINEMATOGRAPHY IS ON POINT WITH A VERY COOL SHOT AT THE END OF THE PILOT EPISODE - THE CAMERA OUT OF THE GUN.
THE HUMOUR SENSE IN THIS SEASON IS PRETTY DECENT. THEY DO PROVIDE US WITH SOME INTENSE MOMENTS IN THE LATER HALF OF THIS SEASON. EPISODES 6 AND 7 ARE REALLY GOOD. ESPECIALLY, EPISODE 6 HAS SOME COOL MOMENTS AND SOME VERY GOOD WRITING IN TERMS OF CHARACTER ARCS AND TRANSFORMATION. THE FINALE OF THE SEASON SETS UP WITH SOME BIGGER SCOPE FOR THE SHOW TO BE EXPANDED. THAT'S FOR SURE.
OVERALL, IT IS ENTERTAINING AND ENJOYABLE AT TIMES YET FEELS GENERIC SOMETIMES.
SEASON 1 RATING: 8/10.
