This episode pulls off an amazing magic trick: make 30 minutes feel like 45 minutes. Yet another filler episode that has Syd working out her decision that we've been waiting 10+ episodes for her to make. At first, it was an interesting approach to have her working through her longstanding dilemma with someone younger than her but then it just kept going and the conversation didn't feel real after a certain point. When Syd breaks down her choices to the girl she's talking to in terms the kid can understand, two different sleepovers, it isn't funny and drags on for too long.
This show is really spinning its wheels. This episode starts with a flashback of Mikey and Carm talking about the restaurant and we've already seen a scene just like this before. Where Carm talks about opening a restaurant and why they can do it. It's been covered don't need to see it again. It's like seeing the Batman origin for the third time. We're in Season 4 now, we all know the why. It's a snoozy start that portends things to come.
I can't believe it's the halfway point of Season 3 and we still haven't had answers to questions posed in Season 3. This show was firing on all cylinders the first two seasons. It felt fresh and tense and unpredictable. Now it's just hobbling along like a busted old carousel. The audience is just going round and round and the thrill is gone. I don't know how many more shots I can handle of people's phones ringing and they ignore the call. I don't know how much more I can watch Syd's look of indecision. What are they even doing with Richie? They don't even know anymore. Plus, how many more times can this show rely on the formula of: characters about to finally talk out a major issue only to be interrupted by someone walking in. Guess it has to wait. It's tired, stale predictable and worst of all just boring.
