I think the reason people don't care for this movie is because it's not what they expected. It doesn't follow the book all that closely and cuts out quite a bit of information, but when you look at this film as a film and not just a copy of a book, it becomes a pretty good movie.

The writing is very well paced; The acting is great; it has excellent cinematography from Bruno Delbonnel; Nicholas Hooper's score is deep and emotional; The CGI and VFX are what you'd expect with Industrial Light and Magic and Double Negative behind them.
