I enjoyed this film quite a bit. The premise seems typical of James Wan, but I assure you it takes bold turns throughout the movie. I'm seeing plenty of reviews saying this movie is ridiculous or dumb, I find that to be overly harsh. This movie was fun. Creepy, well done atmosphere. I really thought the musical score was cool. It was pretty over-the-top, in a good way. I thought I had an idea of what was going on in the story, & I was pleasantly surprised. People have been saying it's stupid or knew what was coming, well I have seen ALOT of movies & I did not see this coming at all. It does have a tonal shift toward the end, but if you have been enjoying the story it should be a nice treat. I would say give it a chance.
Nia DaCosta has shown potential with her debut film Candyman. There was some interesting ideas and great cinematography, but the themes it presented & social commentary were handled with the subtely of a sledgehammer to the face. Way too unbalanced. All black people are innocent victims, all the white people were bullies & then slaughtered by "Candyman" (NOT Tony Todd, some creeper named Sherman) & all the cops instantly killed the black folks, even as they lay on the ground, unarmed & dying. I'm not saying bad things don't happen, but there needs to be some balance. Everything was obviously slanted towards one narrative.
When I saw the trailers for this film, I thought it would be another Jason Statham action thriller. The trailer showed a good bit of what you can expect, jut then as the film unfolds it gets darker, more violent & brutal. I ended up liking this film quite a bit. Excellent cast, Jason Statham is good as usual, but the added intensity made it even better (in my opinion). It was also great to see Josh Hartnett again, even if I wish they utilized him more. & Scott Eastwood surprised me, he was good as well. The plot had some interesting twists & did a good job of making me think it was going one way, but then doing something different & pulled it off well. It feels a bit mainstream for Guy Ritchie, but you can pick up on some fun, witty dialog here & there. I would say it's an action thriller, a cross between a revenge flick & a heist film. If you're interested, I definitely recommend a watch.
