I watch ALOT of horror films, of all sub-genre. I love most of David Cronenberg's work so of course once I heard about this I went to see it, last week. My barometer passes the test if after seeing a film I immediately want to rewatch it again for various reasons.
I award plaudits to both Actresses on whom the success of this film lies, it could have quite easily slipped into farce and prevented me from suspending my belief in what was being portrayed as taking place.
Their triumph was in convincing the viewer that they both were one person of one soul, consumed by self-loathing for both its bodys aging process & for the shallowness of its youth.
I'm going to go see it again this week at my local Showcase cinema, if you like body horror I suggest you do too.

I watch alot of horror. Probably over 3000 "fantasy melodramas" in my lifetime so far.
I'm a believer in " horror belongs in the eye of the beholder " that's to say one persons horror is another's comedy, Vincent Price was a great believer in that and played it to good effect in many of his roles.
Watch this as I had the great fortune to, without knowing anything about it beforehand. Pay attention to the screen and avoid distractions. The story which unfolds will hold you and for some disturb you.
The actors playing the central two roles are quite superb and convincingly portrayed, Carrie Snodgress should have got an Oscar nomination for this performance imo and Ray Milland must have played his character with aplomb because by a third of the way through I hated his guts and was rooting for his daughter as I'm sure will you.
A pleasure to watch an absorbing screenplay which holds the viewers attention if you're prepared to watch closely and the climax , well for me as good as if not better than Hitchcock's Psycho.
Psychological melodrama? Nope, for me Psychological Horror !
