His great-great-grandfather, Adam Klein, was a founding father of Klein, Texas, where Lyle was born and now resides.

Inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame on March 10, 2006. The other inductees were Matthew McConaughey, Kris Kristofferson, JoBeth Williams and Cybill Shepherd.

Graduated from Klein High School, the first high school built in the Klein Independent School District, named for his ancestor, Adam Klein. All High Schools in the District include the Klein name. Other high schools in the district include Klein Forest, Klein Oak, and Klein Collins.

Originally slated to play one of the singing cowboys in Radio America (2006).

He once bought a Cadillac El Dorado from Hunter S. Thompson.
