Good costumes and vehicles, horrible acting and cinematography

I was not sure if I was watching an unedited version of the film, or if the film intended to have some type of field documentary feel to it, but the acting, even though it was all in German, felt like a school project at best, and the editing was horrible, and all the extras (german soldiers and GIs and Soviets) seemed to have been plucked from a WWII airsoft gathering. I rarely do this, but after 10 minutes, started to fast foward in 10 second intervals for another 30% of the movie, until I finally just turned it off.

the outfits, vehicles looked quite convincing, but the acting made "act of valour" look like an oscar worthy performance, and the camera work was about as par as the "Coca-Cola Regal Films" Stanley Kubrick-isque.

2 stars are for the valiant efforts of the costume department, if there ever was one.

authentic personal memory of the war

I've read the memoirs of Gen. Zhukov... it includes no personal views or feelings... its great to see a personal view of the simple drama of soldier's experience.. with small details ... and no hyperbole. the ending is shocking, but likely true... the GIs were humans too, with their weaknesses.
