Augusta Bled is married to valiant Alf Blütecher. It only takes eight minutes of this feature for him to die in battle. After four years, She marries again, to another officer, Olaf Fønss. Holger-Madsen's anti-war movie is a major effort for 1914, with battle scenes, court parties, and personal heartbreak, with careful shooting by cinematographer Marius Clausen. He offers a handsome pullback and close-in shot in a piece of film grammar that would later be refined into standard techniques. It's a heartfelt and well-executed film that makes its sympathies quite clear. Six months after its release, Europe would go to war again.
