Convention Girl

Rose Hobart is a cabaret hostess in Atlantic City. This means she'll sit with you, let you pay for her cocktails that are actually just colored water, but this being the era of the Production Code, that's as far as it goes. She loves Weldon Hayburn, who is an honest gambler, and he loves her, but they won't get married because she doesn't approve of gambling, even honest gambling. Not that there aren't dishonest gamblers, like Shemp Howard, waiting to take advantages of suckers like visiting bachelor Herbert Rawlinson, who is charmed by Miss Hobart and Hayburn, and charms them in turn; and also easily manipulated people like Toni Reed, Miss Hobart's nephew.

Despite some good casting, Luther Reed in the director's chair, and some nice tourist events from Atlantic City spliced in, like the diving horses, it doesn't really work. Honest gamblers, honest clip joint hostesses, and wealthy men who believe them are simply not believable to me. Gotta give this movie a point, though for casting Howard in a serious role.
