In the wake of ABC's great success with its prime-time soap opera "Peyton Place",CBS decided to try its own version and its first venture in the prime-time television with its form that premiered in the summer of 1965 titled "Our Private World". This series was a spin-off from its highly successful daytime serial "As The World Turns". The series was produced by CBS Television and Proctor and Gamble Productions. This was the first time that Proctor and Gamble Productions has produced a series in prime-time that was based from a spin-off from its own successful daytime series. Proctor and Gamble Productions,at the time that series premiered, was still in the business of the daytime serials("Search For Tomorrow","The Edge of Night","Guiding Light","Another World",and "As The World Turns"). Never before has Proctor and Gamble ventured into the medium of prime-time and this was indeed the first and the last time that have done this. But it was a bold and daring experiment to see what would happened.
The series ran during the summer of 1965 for CBS-TV,producing 23 episodes that ran from May 5,1965 until September 10,1965. The series, just like the daytime version, was videotaped and was produced in classic black and white. Its broadcast history when it premiered from May of 1965 through July of 1965,the series was telecast on Wednesday nights at the 9:30-10:00 time slot as the replacement for the cancelled "The Cara Williams Show". From July of 1965 through September of 1965,the show moved to Friday nights and at an earlier time slot at the 9:00-9:30 as a summer replacement for the short-lived series "The Entertainers". Show did however have some strong competition. On Wednesday nights,it was placed opposite ABC's powerhouse crime drama "Burke's Law",and "The NBC Wednesday Night Movie". When it moved to Friday nights in July of 1965,the show was placed opposite ABC's successful World War II drama "Twelve O'Clock High"(which was produced by Quinn Martin),and NBC's "The Chrysler Theatre".
"Our Private World" was a spin-off from the highly successful daytime serial "As The World Turns" and focused on Lisa Hughes, one of the leading characters of the daytime soap opera(played by Eileen Fulton who to this day is still with the series after many years). Young divorcée Lisa decided to find a new life for herself by leaving her small hometown and moving to the exciting adventures and bright lights and career change of Chicago,Illinois, where she found a job in the admitting room of a hospital. The two major plot lines involved her life and associations at the hospital and the machinations of the Eldredges,a socially prominent and extremely wealthy family living in the exclusive suburbs of Lake Forest. The CBS experiment proved to be as successful as the producers thought. Due to low ratings that this show presented, the series was canceled by the end of the summer of 1965,leaving actress Eileen Fulton to return to daytime television only. The executive producer of this series was none other than Irma Phillips(who was also the creator of "As The World Turns"),and produced by Allen Potter and William J. Bell(who was one of the writers for this short-lived series, who would go on to bigger and better things in daytime television, and for CBS as the creator of "The Young and the Restless",and "The Bold and the Beautiful"). By September of 1965,CBS found a replacement for "Our Private World"... "The Smothers Brothers Show",which was placed on the time slot for the Friday night schedule and the hour long political drama "Slattery's People" starring Richard Crenna.
