Both of his parents were dead in a car accident when he was little, so he probably received some grant/loans from the govt. Gloria also worked and from memory I'm sure she mentioned she helped him. that kind of burden to repay his wife and the govt. and Archie would not be easy on anyone. Remember, he was supposed to be in his early 20s. Also during the episode Mike Comes Into Money he did work briefly at a gas station to raise the $200 he donated to the McGovern campaign (money Mike inherited from his Uncle Alex) over Archie's objections in order to help repay some of his room and board

Wasn't "All in the Family" adapted from a UK comedy to begin with?

(1st Verse) Every week Glenn Miller played

Tunes that owned the Hit Parade

    Working-class folks had it made

    Those were the days

(1st Bridge) Always knew where you stood then

Gals were gals and men were men

We could really use a "Prez" like Herbert Hoover again

(2nd Verse) Didn't need no welfare state

    Everyone pulled his own weight

And my old LaSalle ran great

    Those were the days

    (2nd Bridge, instrumental)

(3rd Verse) Children knew what "reverence" meant

    $50 paid the rent

    No tips less than 12%

    Those were the days

(3rd Bridge) You could take a weekend spin

Off to see the Dodgers win

Followed by an on-the-town which cost you under a fin

(4th Verse) Hair was short and skirts were long

Kate Smith sure could sell a song

I don't know just what went wrong

    Those were the days

In Archie's Aching Back (1971). Lionel (Mike Evans) tells Archie (Carroll O'Connor) that his parents won some money in a lawsuit and used it to open up a dry cleaning business.

We haven't met Lionel's parents yet, nor have we learned the family's last name.
