Entertaining Throwback to the Warner Prison Movies

    Undisputed (2002)

    *** (out of 4)

Heavyweight champion George 'Iceman' Chambers (Ving Rhames) is convicted of a rape he says never happened and is sent to prison in the prime of his life. Inside the prison is a boxing ring where Monroe Hutchen (Wesley Snipes) is the champ. It doesn't take long until mob boss Mendy (Peter Falk) talks the men into a battle between the undisputed champs.

For some reason, UNDISPUTED turned out to be yet another box office disappointment for director Walter Hill, which is really too bad because this here is a rather fun movie for what it is. Perhaps what it is is why it didn't catch on with the public but, again, that's too bad because the film is actually a lot of fun as long as you don't take it too serious.

The film really plays out like one of those Warner prison dramas from the 1930s. Not the "A" list ones but a low-budget "B" movie where you got a nice cast, threw them behind bars and then let everything play out. If you're looking for messages or heart-warming drama of character being built then this isn't the movie for you. Everything happens rather quickly and without too much reason but both Rhames and Snipes are so fun that you can overlook any flaws.

Hill does a great job at slowly building up the anticipation to the fight. There are some really fun mini-battles between the two men and all of this really gets you pumped up for the eventual fight. Once the fight happens the entertainment continues as it certainly lives up to everything the director has built up. Not only do Rhames and Snipes do a nice job in their roles but we also get good support from Faulk, Michael Rooker and Wes Studi.

Again, if you're expecting some sort of hard hitting drama then you're going to be disappointed. This is the type of movie where you just turn your brain off, kick back and have a good time with it.

    Ponderous,even for 90 minutes.

STAR RATING:*****Unmissable****Very Good***Okay**You Could Go Out For A Meal Instead*Avoid At All Costs

The reliably dreary Walter Hill churns out yet another slow-moving,action lacking yarn. The story is an incoherent, structureless bore concerning the impending showdown between Sweatwater Prison's reigning boxing champ (Wesley Snipes) and the rough, heavy new arrival (Ving Rhames).Performance wise,Rhames is quite impressive as a volatile, easily provoked big-brooding thug who makes Mike Tyson look like a pussycat in comparison, but Snipes is wasted as a more reserved,Lennox Lewis-alike who practises oragami in his spare time. And sadly, for an actor who can usually be relied upon to deliver the dramatic goods, for some reason here he seems really disinterested in his role, not bothering to flex any emotion or sense of involvement whatsoever.

In fact, the whole thing seems to have been weirdly inspired by the year's big Lewis/Tyson showdown event.Oh well, the real thing always is more exciting isn't it?**

A mix of boxing flick and prison picture, professionally directed by Walter Hill

In a character with Mike Tyson resonance , Ving Rhames plays the heavyweight champ moved and locked to Sweetwater high security pen on a rape conviction. Awaiting him is his contender Wesley Snipes , one time ranked fighter who's beaten all-comers in the prison boxing programme and given the presence of the always sympathetic Peter Falk, as a noted student of the boxing sport , the rest is given . The biggest fight of their lives ! . One man fighting for his honor , one man fighting for his future ..two enemies ..the Mob ..the ultimate Showdown. At Sweetwater prison .The World Heavyweight Champion is about to meet his Match .

A crossover of boxing film along with prison flick with usual ingredients . The outcome , however , is not entertainment enough , though both protagonists , Rhames and Snipes , are utterly convincing in the chinches. Containing credible and violent fight scenes , confronting brute force , pitching , big punch from Ving Rhames against speed , ferocity from Wesley Snipes .Along the way , there's a nod to the traditions and achievements of past title holders . The stunning starring , Wesley Snipes and Ving Rhames , are well supported by a good secondary cast with plenty of familiar faces, such as : Peter Falk, Jon Seda , Wes Studi , Fisher Stevens , Dayton Calle , Amy Aquino , among others. The motion picture was well directed by Walter Hill , though a little bit boring .

It followed various sequels : Undisputed 2 Last Man Standing 2006 by Isaac Florentine with Michael Jai White , Scott Adkins . Undisputed 3 Redemption 2010 by Isaac Florentine with Scott Adkins , Mykel Shannon Jenkins .Boyka: Undisputed 2016 by Todor Chapkanov with Scott Adkins , Julian Vergov .

When does a champ become the challenger?

Outstanding movie with prison combined with boxing. A heavyweight title holder(Ving Rhames)is sent to Sweetwater Prison on a rape charge. It doesn't take long for the movers and shakers to set up a match with the champ and the prison champ(Wesley Snipes). A battle of undisputed undefeated. Very good fight scenes and you almost feel the sweat. A little slow at times, but the big showdown is all worth it. It is obvious Snipes and Rhames worked hard to pull this off. Peter Falk plays a vulgar mouthed resident gangster that thinks he rules the prison. Also in the cast are: Fisher Stevens, Wes Studi and Michael Rooker. This one goes the distance.

A solid prison drama with strong performances by Wesley Snipes and Ving Rhames, but the film lacks in any form of human emotion or character study and just leaves a dark shell that isn't totally filled and makes you feel unsatisfied. But it's not to say it isn't well-crafted from it's director, Walter Hill. It also has one of the best boxing showdowns shown in a film since the original Rocky and Raging Bull.

Walter Hill took the treatment to Wesley Snipes, who was interested in the story even before it had been turned into a script. "I told him it was conceivable that he could play either (lead) role, but what will not change is the fight and who wins in the end." Hill said. Hill then sent the script to Ving Rhames, who called back the next day saying he wanted to play "Iceman"; Snipes was happy to play the other role.
