The Heroes of San Gill

Everyone in Laredo is heading over to the annual fiesta in nearby San Gill. Chad (Peter Brown) and Joe (William Smith) want to join the celebration; but, Capt. Parmalee (Philip Carey) assigns them office duty in Laredo. The Rangers try to trick Reese (Neville Brand), returning from last week's assignment, into taking over, with limited success. Of course, the Rangers go anyway. At the fiesta, they try to avoid Parmalee; and, later, become involved in thwarting an assassination plot.

Colorful, silly, and predictable. Chad wears a Devil mask, Joe is the Rabbit, and Reese sometimes plays the Frog. Lonny Chapman guest stars (as Julius). Given the festive tone of the episode, and the lightheartedness of the series, the scene featuring Reese being brutally whipped is startling. His back is covered with bloody, realistic welts, sadistically administered by Theo Marcuse (as Waldo). The apparent severity of the whipping does not match the character's later antics.

Captain Parmalee has to leave for the border town of San Gill from his border town of Laredo. Which of his three problem children to leave in charge? As is usual Peter Brown and William Smith pull another fast one on Neville Brand. He's made the acting captain and made to think it's his idea so they can go to the festival at San Gill for the big fiesta. You know how those Texas Rangers like to party.

But at San Gill there's a nasty doings afoot courtesy of Theo Marcuse and Lonny Chapman. And Philip Carey could get caught up in it as well. It's something that Brown and Smith smell out while having to wear those fiesta masks lest the Captain spot them playing hooky. Brand when he realizes he's missing out on all the action abandons Laredo for San Gill.

In the end the captain owes them his life, but they do rate some punishment.
