It's ironic that "Billy Knight" tries so hard to be an ode to cinema yet showcases so much inept filmmaking that it actually tends to besmirch the art form through its very existence.

Given the script's numerous glorifying name-drops of legendary auteur Orson Welles, one might think "BK's" writer-director would have learned a thing or two from the late master. Whereas the iconic "Rosebud" appeared only fleetingly in Citizen Kane, a totemic embroidered handkerchief that figures so prominently in Billy Knight is so ham-fistedly overused and overblown that it becomes an absurdity.

The always-charismatic Al Pacino lends much gravitas to the proceedings, but even his presence can't hide this film's generally insipid dialog, stilted direction, disjointed pacing, weak storyline, and sometimes cringe-inducing performances by its other principals.

The plot turns on the directorial inspiration and tutelage supposedly imparted by Pacino's phantasmic character onto a wannabe acolyte (who's an obvious surrogate for "BK's" own creator). But next to nothing is actually said or done to either inspire or tutor the hapless film student, though the audience is expected to believe it has.

I could go on, but it's sufficient to say that "Billy Knight" is at best a misfire if not an outright dud.

This film is invigorating and deeply inspiring. Even without being in the film industry, I found myself relating to getting lost in a world of your own making, and the sacrifices that come along with that creative journey.

It's a film I cannot recommend enough, with a beautiful message about nurturing creativity and valuing the essence of who we are while balancing that with love and reality.
