Sword of the Sea

Sword of the Sea is a beautiful and atmospheric game by Matt Nava, the former art director of Journey, who now leads Giant Squid. It's a journey that offers players not so much a challenge as an aesthetic pleasure.

You silently glide on a hoverboard across wastelands and flooded ruins, restoring their lost beauty. This journey is accompanied by the calm and melodic music of Austin Wintory, which helps immerse you in the atmosphere and enhances the feeling of solitude. Instead of words, the game tells its story through images and emotions, focusing on an artistic experience rather than a traditional narrative.

Although games like this haven't always been to our taste, Sword of the Sea managed to captivate us with its atmosphere and simplicity, leaving a pleasant impression.

If you're familiar with Matt Nava's previous work, you'll notice a similar style - minimalism, attention to aesthetics and emotions rather than complex mechanics. For those looking for relaxation and a chance to "reset," Sword of the Sea can be a welcome discovery.

It's less a game and more an opportunity to experience a short but memorable journey. It doesn't aim for complexity or depth but bets on atmosphere and emotions that will stay with you long after playing. 7/10.

A beautiful melding and combination of all of Giant Squid's previous works. This is arguably their most beautiful and ambitious game to date, using wide color pallets and large sprawling vistas to sport. The soundtrack is also one of their best to date (Composed by Austin Wintory), utilizing delicate piano work and astounding vocal work as well. Most importantly, it simply felt brilliant to play as you surf the tundras and seas (dualsense support is on full effect here). Can't wait to see what they make next, I'll be there day 1.
