Terrific

I know people say all the time how a show is one of the best shows of the year but Task is absolutely, without a doubt one of the best new shows of the year. Everything about it is terrific...the acting, writing, directing, cinematography, etc, etc. It's HBO at its best. Mark Ruffalo and Tom Pelfrey are both amazing actors who have both been nominated for a ton of awards and this might be some their best work of their careers. I'll be shocked if they both don't get nominated and win a bunch of awards for this. The only negative is that we have to wait a week between episodes, I much prefer to binge watch especially when a show is as special as this one is.

This is Peak HBO

Task is a new crime drama from HBO and I can't say enough about how great this series is. This series is about a Task Force led by an FBI agent (Mark Ruffalo) who has to put an end to a string of violent robberies by a family name (Tom Pelfrey). Ruffalo and Pelfrey give memorizing performances that you just can't stop watching. HBO hit another home run with this limited series. We've seen stories like this before, the car and mouse game between the police and the criminal so a show really has to be great to stand out and Task definitely does that. It's a masterful series that's one of the must see shows this year. I can't say enough not recommend this show enough so do yourself a favor and go watch this as soon as you can..

Amazing show

I didn't read anything going into this show I just started the first episode so I could get a raw experience. It was amazing, it shows the life of an FBI agents and the life of the criminals at the same time. This movie kind of reminds me of "A Place Beyond The Pines" with Ryan Gosling. Amazing camera work and sound track, love this show.

Amazing !!!! Brilliant captivating work ... finally!!!!

I am most likely one of the hardest people to get to sit still much less capture 100 percent of my attention ... I search every possible app , friends suggestions , my families recommendations.... And this literally had me by the end of the first episodes searching for the next. I can not even say enough start watching pay close attention to each person, each storyline and do not miss a detail .... It's amazingly captivating and takes you places you can not help but go and once you get there you are anticipating more and you are feeling so many levels of emotion that you literally can not wait to find out more. This so far is a Brilliant well thought out gem !!! The intensity of the evolving story line gets better with each episode as each characters personalities and story becomes more clear, the connections start to come together in such a unique way it is extremely hard not to become emotionally attached, and eagerly waiting for the next episode. A must watch !!!

DEAD OF NIGHT

A pitch-black crime drama owing not only to its dark subject matter, but also to the hush-hush hours of the night during which so much of the violence takes place. A gang of Halloween-masked thieves raid drug dealers' homes in the wee hours to steal their loot, and an FBI task force is sent out to catch them; when things go horribly wrong during one job--and a little boy who sees the bad guys with their masks off is kidnapped--the agents are suddenly facing more than they bargained for. Actually, the thieves themselves aren't the only baddies--after they're introduced in episode one, the very next installment gives us our first extended look at the biker gang that also wants in on the action. (And if the guys we see at the beginning seem bad, the bikers we meet one episode later make them look like choir boys.) The decision to portray the thieves almost (but not quite) as average Joes--at least at home--is interesting, and gives "Task" a family vibe it otherwise might have lacked. Their leader, for example, has in his care (albeit a tad reluctantly) a young niece and nephew, and their steel-jawed, fed-up older sister. Tom Pelphrey plays the character with a surprising amount of depth; clearly he's a man who--when he's not planning robberies and carrying them out--has it in his heart to be as good as he can be to the youngest ones, though less so, generally, to their sister. As the guy in charge of the task force, the excellent Mark Ruffalo--gray-haired, paunchy, and tired--doesn't appear to be capable of solving a series of dollar store robberies let alone something as big as this. (He also drinks a lot, largely because of some debilitating family problems of his own.) There's a kind of moral ambiguity here, too: what are we to make of the fact--if we're to make anything of it at all--that the home invaders aren't ripping off law abiding citizens, but users and dealers and thugs? Does that make them, at least at first, any less...evil? Moody and atmospheric, tense and suspenseful, "Task" has promise. I've only just started, and intend to go back for more. Check it out.

Captivating

What an opening episode to a series! There are so many angles to expand and expound upon ... I wish it were a whole season drop! Love the character development in just one episode. Depth and complexity. It's been more alluring since I live in Delaware count. Counting the days until episode two, will be interesting to see how it all comes together.

HBO for the win! And perfect timing!

In lighter news today (it's been a rough 24 hours), this brand new series on HBO Max seems very impressive, intriguing, and immersive (the three big Is of good moviemaking, I think). I've always been impressed with Mark Ruffalo (who skills were sorely overlooked by that Hulk nonsense - although he DID kill the roll!), and he's absolutely in top-form in this show. Mark has the ability to become the "everyman" (in other words, YOU) when he works a script, which is put to perfect use here. 23-year-old Emilia Jones (who was an incredible standout in the excellent 2021 movie "CODA") was perfectly cast and shines in this role. Very impressive work absorbing her character. Her career is looking very bright. I'm not familiar with Tom Pelphrey but I may have to look into his catalog of work because he's quite convincing and effective, and he played off his supporting crew really well. Add all the good acting to some good atmospheric cinematography and scoring and this one's looking pretty promising.

It remains to be seen (this Sunday) if episode two is as good as the pilot, but based on what I've seen so far this is looking like a fascinating story. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying I sure could use the short escape today, so thanks, HBO.

Hard to bash after one episode.

Strange to see people run to their phones and light up a series after one episode, or in some cases didnt even watch the entire episode.

That's negligence on their part. If you dont like it, move on or "stay til the end" then the review seems more comprehensive as well as more subjective.

Back to it. The show is essentially, or appears to be out of the gate, almost the same exact premise as Apple TV's Dope Thief, which was thoroughly enjoyed in this house. Is that good or bad? Well, could be bad on one hand, as Dope Thief was very well done. Is this? Not sure yet, the the similarities hopefully stops there, moving forward. Seems slower developing and a bit more plodding, but not fair to review based on a sampling of one episode. Will edit moving forward.

EDIT: and back to it heading into what should be a solid finale. Again, the Dope Thief comparison was.on play after viewing the first episode. I came to see what the response was after it aired and was shocked by the people that jumped in to say it sucked and shut it off, or the "pacing" didnt meet their approval. This was the only reason I countered with my own take. Stating that the similarities seemed there, but thats where they end to be honest.

Unless the wheels come off next week in the episode 7 this has been a hell of a triumph for what I thought was going to be another yawnfest. Great writing, direction and memorable performances throughout.

Wraps up next week and cant wait to see where the undermining within, and the antagonists end up. Near perfection, and also to be honest, didnt like the directors previous series as it spun its tires for too long to stay engaged.

So far so good

Just finished episode 3 and they've all been good. The performances by all the actors has been really well executed, there's a good variety of personality types in the characters and the plot line, although not super unique, is interesting. It has some SOA vibes. I'll definitely be seeing it through to the end.

Anyone who dismissed Task after the first episode is probably the same type who found True Detective Season 1 boring

Episode 1 frames Task as a moral thriller about faith, family, and blurred lines between justice and crime - setting up Tom and Robbie as mirror opposites destined to collide.

Faith vs. Corruption Tom is a former priest turned FBI agent, torn between his past faith and present disillusionment.

Robbie claims to have a "code" even while committing brutal robberies, showing how morality can be twisted.

Family and Burden Both Tom and Robbie are defined by family struggles: Tom's son is in prison, fracturing his faith and identity.

Robbie is raising kids while dragging himself/them into his criminal life.

The series shows how family obligations can both ground and corrupt people.

Cycles of Violence The drug-house robberies are meant to target criminals, but they spiral into bloodshed.

Violence breeds more violence, leaving kids (like Sam) caught in the crossfire.

Moral Ambiguity Neither "good" nor "bad" characters are purely so: Tom is a priest-turned-agent wrestling with guilt and fractured faith.

Robbie is a robber who shows tenderness toward children, even while endangering them.

The show sets up a world where everyone operates in shades of gray.

Loss of Innocence Children (Ethan, Maeve, Sam) are central - each losing innocence in different ways.

Their suffering reflects how adult failures and corruption ripple down to the next generation.

All of this in 1st episode, lets see how it turns in next 6.

Solid mini series

Task is a solid mini series for binge watching that doesn't overwhelm or require too much thinking. This is the type of show if you're following like 2-3 other series and you need a break from these shows, something to "rest your brain", task is that kind of show, and it won't disappoint you.

Don't be fooled by the first episode if it feels boring! It feels a bit slow because it's focused on introducing the characters and setting the tone, but things definitely pick up after that. It has some dark and heavy moments, so it can feel a bit depressing at times.

The acting is good, the story is decent, and overall it leaves a solid impression 7/10 (not bad-not great).

Hard to watch

I'm really struggling to force myself to watch this. I generally enjoy what HBO puts out and when I saw Ruffalo was in it, I was excited to give this a watch. It jumps around a lot, and there is a lot of seemingly unnecessary dialogue. I am so bored I feel like doing anything else instead; even watching grass grow sounds more exciting.

Great Character writing/acting

Entering episode 2 and already a solid foundation of story telling. Strong performances by Robbie's niece which I believe will be a break out role for her. The tone is perfect for the area. It's good to find plot building moments that rely on background details. The impatience of modern day viewers with a thousand options out there will be bored but that's ok. This is good for HBO. Ruffalo's acting is on par but not as notable as the other up and comers. Add to your watchlist for sure.

Outstanding first episode, can't wait for more!

As Episode 1 of "Task" (2025 release; 7 episodes of about an hour each) opens, we are introduced to Tom Brandis, working an FBI recruiting table somewhere in suburban Philadelphia. In a parallel story, we get to know Robbie and Cliff, who work at the local garbage collection company, and who keenly observe houses in the area as potential targets for a robbery. At this point we are less than 10 minutes into Episode 1.

Couple of comments: this is the latest brainchild of Brad Ingelsby ("Out of the Furnace", "Mare of Easttown"). Here he brings us the story of an FBI agent, who is recovering from some unspecified family-related trauma, and the parallel lives of some low-lifes up to no good. As he has done in the past, things are not bought into back-and-white, right-and-wrong. As the first episode plays out, what we get instead is a lot of nuance and context about these main characters, their day-to-day lives, interactions and surroundings. I absolutely LOVED Episode 1, all of it, and did not want the episode to end. Mark Ruffalo is excellent as the FBI agent, as is Tom Pelphrey as Robbie, and the many other smaller roles are top quality too. I can't wait for the remaining 6 episodes.

"Task" premiered on HBO last Sunday and it is also streaming on HBO Max, where I watched it the other night. The remaining 6 episodes will be released on a weekly basis on Sundays. "Task" is currently rated 90% Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and that sounds about right to me. If you are in the mood for another top-quality drama similar in spirit to "Out of the Furnace" And "Mare of Easttown", I'd readily recommend you check this out and draw your own conclusion.

*UPDATE* I've now seen the 2nd and 3th episodes. I am emotionally gutted. This is by far the best mini-series I have watched this year.

*UPDATE* I've now seen all 7 episodes, and this is the best TV mini-series of the year without a doubt. Every single episode is riveting.

Can't wait for more!

Perfect amount of plot and suspense! I like the background story that they're giving for both of the main characters, it leaves you wanting more. I am already into the show and now I'm Rewatching the first episode so my wife can get into it. Now we're watching episode two. Episode two is getting heavy!! Can't wait until next episode!

What a great start!!!

TBH, This show popped up as I opened the HBO/Max app, and I drilled into it on accident.

After reading a brief synopsis I decided to give it a try as I had an hour to "kill" (no pun intended). Wow, what starts as a peek into the lives of two families on opposite sides of the law, eventually converges to the scene of a gruesome crime; a robbery gone wrong. The events that lead up to the scene lay the groundwork for what I feel will be another hit crime drama for the Network.

With Mark Ruffalo and Tom Pelphrey at the helm, you can expect a great product. For a show that I had no background on, and didn't anticipate, I am thoroughly happy that I have discovered a new show to look forward to in the weeks to come.

Oh so good!!! Want to put it at 8.5 stars.

Just got done watching episode six of this series. This series is so intense and seems to be well written, beautifully acted and everything else. One of the best cop shows I've seen. I thought it was over with but there's one episode left.

Mark Ruffalo of course is excellent and a surprise (for me) Tom Pelphrey just blows my mind. The supporting cops, the niece, children and some bad guys are amazing as well. (Don't want to spoil anything here.)

Thank you for a suspenseful, amazing show! I think my heart is still beating fast after tonight.

Well done

This series takes the well developed flawed character to a beautiful level. And boy do the actors do a great job in portraying them. The story is wel layered yet not very complex. The viewer might think he can predict what's going on, and sometimes this is even true, but what happens next remains uncertain. All in all a well crafted series one of the best I have watched this year.

Might've been written by AI

The plot and characters are so full of generic cliches there is very little doubt in my mind this show was written by AI. The characters backstories are so full of cliches I almost chuckled every time a new one made an appearance. There are a lot of random scenes that just appear to try and recreate the atmosphere from other similar movies instead of being original. Including some bizarrely upbeat soundtracked scenes in an otherwise muted show. The dialogue and the delivery of said dialogue is a snooze fest, and delivered as if they were sleep walking.

I wanted to like the show based on the premise and the cast. But it's just not good. Watch Dope Thief instead.

To me it's exactly what HBO needed!

I don't know why it's already hated if people wanted action from the pilot then they should watch other stuff. Task is really well made with phenomenal charming cast! I've been anticipating this series seems it'll have buildup and superb episodes similar to Mare of East town style although I loved the cast of that series. I love the madness of this series already hope others do too!

So uninteresting

I do wonder how "creatives" manage to get jobs. My 3 rating means you will regret watching this.

How can you get elements which have worked well since he beginning of TV and produce this boring slog fest of irrelevancy.

I think it is a mixture of simply boring actors, delivering slow boring lines. You don't care about any of these characters.

I think Mark Ruffalo and his delivery fits the boringness of this whole production, it is a strong reason why there is absolutely nothing you care about to watch in this.

Running around fighting crime and all the other tropes which have always delivered since the beginning of time just fail. Throw in some unnecessary side plots just makes it worse because the core is rotten.

I give it a 3 because outside of the boring actors and the boring directing/camera work, the production value looks high, they obviously spent some money on this but everything else is so bad. I cant decide if the script was a contributor or the victim of this disaster.

Hooked

Hoping it continues to be as interesting. Not usually a fan of these types of series. They get formulaic, filling too much time. Knew nothing about it but thought I'd try. Glad I did. Interesting characters but how will they develop?

I liked Mare of Easttown a lot so why not?

I want to be interested enough to be ready for new episodes.

Damn, this might be as good as Ozark

I love the actors. That guy from Ozark is so talented. What a great acting! I can sense just from his character's eyes that he's mentally unhappy. I love the lines. I love the family dynamics. I love the music background. I love each character has unique sides. HBO, hope you don't disappoint me in the next episodes.

A stunning excellent first episode

Wow

Potential for show of the year after the first episode. It was a sensational start to a new show.

Incredible acting, fast flowing story, deep meaningful and utter mayhem right from the start.

A cast of incredible actors and for the first time in many a year I was actually devasted whe. The credits rolled and knew I would need to wait another week for the next episode.
