Mickey mouse clubhouse + attempts to recapture the magic of the original Mickey mouse clubhouse show. It misses the mark entirely but there are a few key changes which, in my opinion, would go a long way.
First and foremost, there is no antagonist. There are no obstacles or trials or even any thought involved. Pete is a shadow of his former self. He used to be a perfect kids show "bad guy". He builds a wall to shield his insecurities. Classic toddler fare. Now he's a doormat. A real wet blanket.
I get that it's a baby show for babies but there needs to be some bite. Some edge. Something to root for. Kids are supposed to care about Mickey and his pals going from place to place with little to no resistance? Where's the fun in that?
Secondly, they totally botched the interactive moments. In "Mickey mouse clubhouse" a child can think for themselves and feel good about calling out the right answer. Or learn something if they were incorrect. Mickey breaks the fourth wall momentarily to build up the viewers self esteem with cheers and hoots.
In "Mickey mouse clubhouse +" the narrative moves so quickly that nobody has a chance to feel like they're part of the adventure. Mickey will throw a few things on the screen, ask a question, and immediately answer it. Leaving no time for the child to react.
This is supposed to be Disney jr. Not tiktok. Mickey and his pals are skimming straight through the plot. Bouncing from one scene to the next. There are no charming tunes. No sweet moments. Just irrelevant irreverent dreck.
Hey Disney. Could you please try to give our young children some semblance of quality programming? So that maybe they won't become addicted to devices and have a chance to use their imagination?
Frankly I could write a book on the difference between Disney jr when it started vs now. About how bad it's gotten and how the shows are all the same. Aside from "Bluey" of course. Which is not a Disney original.
