Arriving on a remote island, a group of friends, using the situation to celebrate a friend's nuptials, learn he's arranged a treasure hunt for them to look into a legendary pirate's long-lost gold hidden on the island, unknowingly resurrecting him as he tries to reclaim his stolen loot.
For the most part, this was a fairly solid and fun indie slasher. Among the brighter aspects found here is the rather fun starting point that manages to hit the kind of engaging setup a story like this requires. From the opening curse by the witch to give us a motivation for the pirate to return later on, the rest of the interactions here involving the group arriving at the house for their party where all sorts of dirty laundry is revealed to everyone that starts the true nature of their invitation to partake in the game, finding the fabled treasure. Getting the drama out in front so that not only does everything it can to get their backgrounds across, but seeing how it affects their chances when the game starts up, manages to give this a fully integrated storyline that gives this a lot to like overall. Once everything starts up and the group is stranded in the woods, they come across the revived pirate hunting them down. The scenes are rather formulaic but still rather fun, mostly revolving around the concept of the team being more concerned with trying to follow the next clue in their game and disbelieving the reality of the pirate in front of them to the point of allowing him to attack the disarmed individuals. The kills aren't spectacular but bloody enough to serve the point here, with the encounters taking place in various spots throughout the woods, so that it gains enough credibility for them to believe what's going on. As the unconventional death order adds an extra layer to what's going on and leads into a rather strong final half, trying to stop him from stopping the curse, there's a lot to like here. There are some drawbacks to this one that hold it down. The main issue with this one is the seemingly random nature of the group going off on the treasure hunt, which makes little sense and has little build-up to why they would go through with it. The single introduction sequence about what's going on and the motivation for the game being just a single coin isn't enough to explain why they would go through with it, especially when everything they do during the process is to mock and ridicule his presence to the point of making it hard to believe that they truly care. Moreover, when the whole thing requires two separate scenes to try to make sense of the curse and the roles different parties have in the course of it all, especially since their goals keep changing, it does hold this back somewhat, much like the cheesy, low-budget approach here.
Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Language, Graphic Violence, Brief Nudity, and several sex scenes.

I think it is hard to review independent horror movies. Usually the low budgets will hamper the quality of the different aspects of the film. It is hard to have a single scale to work with. It is hard to judge this movie against big budget Hollywood horror movies. Having said all that I believe this to be an average example of independent horror movies. Some of it was very interesting and very good, but some of it was not. Some acting was pretty good, and some was not good at all. If you like low budget horror, I would recommend this. If you don't, then stay away from it. And again, with my reviews, I try to give away zero spoilers.
