A promising feature debut

I saw KANDIYOHI at a test screening and found several rewarding things about this suspenseful crime thriller from director Engan. He makes very effective use of the rural settings in a lyrical way that reminds one of the silent cinema. He's very good at conveying mood without a lot of dialogue. The quick cuts during one sequence (a flashback, if I recall) had the same kind of bravura editing as an early Van Sant film. There was at least one extreme long shot in the cornfield that echoed Malick's BADLANDS and the connection is that both pictures portray outlaws on the run amidst a rich natural environment. The picture's thematic and moral aspects--which I do want to spoil--are reminiscent of the Coens' NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN. A sleeper not to be missed!
