It does not get better than this. A cast of wacky characters headed by super sleuth Detective Cupp ( Uzo Aduba) keep viewers on the edge of their seats throughout. There are nods of references to old style whodunnits like Agatha Christie, Pink Panther and Columbo. Aduba is riveting as the socially disinterested, obsessed bird watching detective. The red herrings and clues are too numerous to follow, so one just needs to sit bank and enjoy the romp.

It is difficult to know who to applaud first. But perhaps Paul William Davies deserves the highest accolade for brilliant writing. But the two directors and editors kept a tight rein so the pacing was nothing other than perfect. Thanks to all the cast for an outstanding effort.

Just when I thought I had enjoyed enough medical shows this gem popped along. Stunning acting and so far above soapie level that I think people might struggle to follow the depth.

We are all so used to the adolescent behaviour of most characters, doctors and all on most medical shows, that we have forgotten what nuanced, mature relationships and issues are about. While there remains some adolescent flouncing, passive-aggression and some aggression, the staff in PULSE deal with some heavy ethical issues more to do with the pressures of hospital management than doctor to patient issues.

The intrigue is well stretched out, and there is some interesting mix of characters. Importantly the cast are great. Special mention must be made of Justina Machado whose screen presence and acting is so good, it is hard to believe that she is not in reality, the Chair of Surgery and Emergency Medicine.

While adolescent romance seems to be the level at which most viewers enjoy their screen time, this one is required viewing for people who would rather watch something with a bite of reality to it with characters who are not just biologically mature but psycho-socially mature too. Well done to writers and directors for maintaining this! I seriously hope there are many more seasons to come.

I am in such conflict here. I love the concept of the Cunk series -the mockumentary style. But the jokes are mostly toilet and genital humour that a 14 year old boy would be proud of.

What made the earlier Cunk mockumentaries quite riveting is that the humour might have had a smattering of genital and toilet humour but it was generally clever. In this special, it seems that the writers decided that virtually every word needed to have a double entendre. It simply felt very childish, silly and a sad, weak attempt at humour. The second serious problem is the too much repetition of Cunk's poor social skills in mentioning vile information using her ex boyfriend and now, a new character, her Aunt. This technique worked well when spaced across episodes. It lost it's impact compacted into a one hour special. Sadly, the, dare we call them 'thoughtful' real scientific information that was present, albeit briefly in each episode of earlier Cunk, was lost in this quest for a laugh a minute.

Having said all of that, Morgan is so brilliant an actor that her expressiveness alone is enough to create amusement. Thanks to her, this special is lifted higher than the writing deserves.
