  • Based on a true story... Dramatized

I had friends who went into the Marines, and a lot of the brutality, harsh training, and name-calling you see in this show is accurate-at least back in the '90s. From what I understand, the storyline draws from the book The Pink Marine, which took place a decade earlier.

That said, Boots is absolutely binge-worthy. If you're overly sensitive or homophobic, this probably isn't the show for you-so don't watch it and then leave a bad review. These are real situations that gay men endured in the military for years. Personally, I see nothing wrong with anyone who wants to fight and even die for our country, no matter who they are.

First of all, if you're old-school, stuck in a patriarchal mindset, you're probably not going to like the female lead character or the staff sergeant. Both are minorities, and the story also centers on three gay male characters. That diversity is exactly what gives the show its depth and power, forcing viewers to confront realities that were ignored or silenced for too long.

One of my favorite lines in the series comes from the staff sergeant:

    > "One of my men had to be on double duty because the higher-ups had to investigate who's putting what in who. The man won a Silver Star for god's sake-who cares?" That's pure poetry.

The character buildup is excellent, showing how people can bond in the most difficult, testosterone-charged, macho environments. There's also a lot of humor woven in. Yes, some parts are fictionalized for dramatic effect, but it's still a powerful story that makes you care about the characters while taking you through laughter, tension, and raw emotion.

And in case you're wondering-yes, the lead actor looked familiar. He played Alex in 13 Reasons Why.

  • Just thru the first episode and I'm laughing

I love it.. just started episode 2. It's adorable and fun and enjoyable. It's great to have Steve Zahn back and a lot of fun to see Glen Powell taking a role where he downplays his beautiful looks. And he carries it off very well. I like the supporting actors a lot and I'm really looking forward to the entire season. I needed something light and fun and I think this is going to be my favorite comedy for the season.

  • I'm hooked... Had to wait till four episodes were up

Started watching the first episode and for some reason I wasn't in the mood I guess. Finally when the 4th episode went up I said okay let's give this a shot. There are several storylines in the first couple episodes that you keep thinking how are these going to be related? Trying to explain it without giving spoilers. In any event by episode 3 or 4 you start seeing the correlations. There are likable characters and there's characters you're not going to like and I found that ones that I did like I actually see they're really darker side, while I was thinking they were a good person so that makes it a good story. I like the whole biker element that comes across very believable. The other thing I really like is the two main story lines both show broken families and how they are dealing with their recent traumas. I'll leave it at that it's pretty great and I'm hooked.

  • I found it very unique in some ways

I'm reading some of the other reviews and come on people.. stop judging based on the wrong things in your own prejudice. It shows how immature your mind is and how ignorant you are for not getting past it. Having said all that, I agree with others that Alex the main character does look quite a bit younger than the wife (although they were born the same year in reality) But that happens all the time let's be honest. Toni Colette is chillingly scary and I've always enjoyed her all the way back to the United States of Tara. Think of it as a mix between one of those camps where they send kids in the wilderness to toughen them up and it's awful.. I know somebody who sent a child there and came back damaged for life. It's got really nice elements of mystery like the whole toad aspect and the whole town being what would seem like liberal hippies but eventually you start thinking this is a complete contradiction to that mindset because of the brutality that they inflict on others to get their end result. So I thought the whole premise was really interesting. It's a great binge watch it's got mystery I liked the development of the different teenagers stuck in there and even some of the elements of them facing their past traumas had some interesting points. So it really kind of puts you through a hole array of emotions on some of the characters, which is something I enjoy. I'm 3/4 of the way through the first season and I'm really enjoying it but I have not completed it so the review is only based on what I've seen so far. It shows you that based in different situations people can react completely out of character, which is true but it also can show you how people can come together even despite their differences. I just finished it so I'm doing a little update. Yes I would have loved the happy ending but that's not realistic and at least for a great possible season 2. I think what it all boils down to is a lesson in child abuse and the damages that it can cause with collateral damage and throughout one's life in the cycle of abuse. I know I worked in it for 2 years and it's awful. The sad thing is when a child has been abused they are the ones that end up having to pay for the therapy to try to move past it while the abuser gets two for the most part live on their life like they did nothing wrong.

  • Definitely makes you keep watching

Welcome aboard the crazy train. It's like Fatal Attraction behavior of a mother who's borderline incestuous and so smothering it's terrifying. There were scenes where all I could think was covert narcissist mom. The girlfriend also will complex character do I believe probably was abused and abandoned by her father acts out inappropriately as well. The two main male characters the son and the father both are spending all their energy trying to please the mother and are caught in a web of all their craziness. What is unique however and something I always look forward to in dramas is the ability to make me feel varying emotions for a character. One minute you're appalled then empathetic then you're angry or confused. Definitely worth a binge watch.

  • A male trying between mama and a girl

I thought it was going to be so so like a TV movie or something. Boy was I wrong, I ended staying up till 2:00 in the morning binge watching it. Lots of parts kept me in suspense, watching two women fight over a man. Calling him a man is a bit of a stretch because he was definitely a mama's boy. There were scenes that I felt slightly sickened by the mother and her behavior almost incestuous. I guess they say you marry your mother LOL. I decide whether or not how good show or a movie is based on my ability to feel different feelings about a character and they definitely did that. There are times you feel sorry for and then angry at both the leading female characters. Both the male characters you feel sorry for and empathetic for the situations that these females put them through. Very interesting show.

  • The Runaways... But with a twist that I loved

I loved The Runaways movie coming from that generation. Saw this pop up and thought hmmm thought it would just be some teen drama. So I turned it on anyway. Halfway through the first episode I was hooked. The differences are they're both real bands but this one is a dramatization on a fictional story but has the real band members playing the characters and doing their own music. I loved the music, I love the storyline, here I am at 1:00 in the morning wanting to go to sleep and I just can't because I am hooked. If you want something that makes you feel good, shows you it teaches a good story to young people about following their dreams versus what their parents want them to do or expect them to do and how they all bond together this is a great series. I don't want to do a spoiler but the last episode was upsetting for a minute because the selfishness the girl. But I also realized that females can really screw up a guy's head :-) and I am one of them.

  • Loved the original, not a fan of New blood

I don't think there's much I can say more than what has already been written about the original. I was so excited for New Blood and maybe just because I was missing it so much I thought higher of it initially. But then the last few episodes yuck it was just muddy and messy and off brand. I realize people go through different stages of their life but I thought it was handled unrealistically. But then Original Sin came out and I absolutely enjoyed it. The younger actors were spot on and I thought it was a stroke of genius. I can't wait for a new season of it. Now having said all that let's talk about Resurrection. I was really hoping the son wasn't going to be in it, because I found him an unlikable character in New Blood. But with a cast that was star studded decided to give it a shot. WOW it is amazing and I even like Harrison now. So congratulations for correcting and redirecting back to the original formula and taking it up a few notches.

  • Season 2 was very enjoyable

I really enjoyed season 2. The first season was great even though I've never played the game, but bought it for my son but never watched it. At first you think it's just a bunch of sociopaths against a group of outsiders versus the Insiders in the first season. The second season really starts to develop the characters. I found myself liking ones who I hated, felt sorry for ones that were at first monsters, the intervention episode was spectacular. I really hope they have a third season I'll leave it at that but definitely the writing when it comes to character development is a lot of fun without getting too deep into emotions where you feel drained afterwards.

  • Of course it's not game of thrones but...

If you love The Last Kingdom, Vikings or any of those sagas including The Pillars of the Earth, World without End, Spanish Princess etc you will enjoy it. It's not at the glitzy level of the Tudors. Reign etc but it's very interesting. I have watched nearly every historical reenactment drama etc there is. So maybe I'm biased.. I was constantly asking AI about correlations between this shows time period and the last Kingdom. One thing I got to say about all these shows is brutality and religion go hand in hand and they are all about power. So glad we've evolved since then LOL.
