Does the writer not understand satire? I mean, knowing it's satire now I can see what they were going for but it really doesn't land well. It's more like Schrödinger's Satire in that it's only satire if it makes you feel uncomfortable. And yes, I'm a White guy so that *might* colour my perspective (pun intended) but literally nothing about this felt satirical. It really did just feel like it was starting out saying "Black folk really are just here to ensure White folks are comfortable in the world". Fortunately it quickly jagged into well-trodden RomCom territory where it could at least be watchable.
That being said, it's not even that notable as a RomCom. It's capable - mostly because of Justice Smith's, An-Li Bogan's, and Drew Tarver's performances - but it's not really anything much that you wouldn't see elsewhere and done better in that regard. Though David Alan Grier DOES, as always, add a certain something worth watching.
Then we get the ending, where Justice Smith REALLY delivers with his performance. That scene is fantastic and feels like what the movie has been trying to get to the whole time, it's just a shame that what came before feels so weak.
If they do end up following up on that final scene with the hinted-at sequel I'll definitely check it out, I just hope they put in a bit more effort with the writing.

It's an interesting move mixing slasher and rom-com elements in together, and you'd think it wouldn't work, but it does. Not incredibly well but well enough to still be enjoyable.
The cast are really good, and it's an especially fun touch having Devon Sawa and Jordana Brewster as the Detectives investigating the murders...naming them the way they did was also a pretty good touch, even if it was apparently nothing to do with who they ended up casting.
The story is decent enough, and the kills are kinda fun if a little goofy, and it COULD have been better in the long run, but it's still worth a watch.

I loved, and watched, this movie so much as a child that I legitimately had dreams where I was one of the boys flying over the vision of the blueprint and the girl I had a crush on at the time was flying with us. I was such a nerd...
Granted the third act is "a letdown" by today's standards, but it fits pretty well with the core concept of kids being kids and getting the opportunity to go exploring farther than they're usually able to. That being said, I'm well aware now that the movie suffered greatly from studio interference so I can't help but wonder what Joe Dante's original vision would have resulted in.
Don't get me wrong, this is a great kids' flick and has held up pretty well in that respect, but I can't help wondering...
