Many people reviewing this movie seem to be making harsh judgments because it seems to me they don't like the characters in this film."The worst of America", I believe is what one reviewer stated. I disagree. I loved every perfectly imperfect person who braved to let their real lives shine through so this truly wild and tragic story could be told.
The protagonist, Xaviar-a young narcissist who comes into this crazy life of crime almost naturally was vulgar and loud and totally full of it- but if you consider his history and the fact that this was the only way he knew that could support his elderly mother and disabled brother you garner a bit of empathy for the big lug. Plus you can't deny that his actions made for a pretty stellar pilot twist.
Peyton, the bank teller who Xaviar robbed was so brave to tell her story when she was visibly shaking and clearly still very affected by the trauma she endured. And Xavier's lawyer, Matthew Merryman was the cutest and sweetest seeming man. I noticed a pencil holder in his desk in one shot that looked as if one of his children made it- and the full sleeve of tattoos, I mean, how against type is that? It's so great.
Let's not forget the star of the film, Michael Lloyd. He was as animated of a character that you could ask for. He was charming and funny at times, and his energy simply bounced off the screen. The dichotomy between the two scenes that stick out in my mind of him of him apprehending a man with zip ties vs him bailing out Xavier because he felt like this guy needed a break I find fascinating and make him lovable.
It is clear to me how much care was taken when putting this film together. Each scene flows into the next seamlessly, with a score layered on top that supports the tone of the scene propelling it forward with such an ease it would seem that the movie and the tunes couldn't exist without one another. If you love film, you can't go wrong by watching ChiefsAholic. As a hillbilly from the Red Kingdom turned liberal city slicker, I give this film two very enthusiastic thumbs up. Let's go Chiefs!
