A bittersweet comedy set just prior to 1984, during the era of 'practical socialism'. For political reasons, Bedrich Mára (Bolek Polívka) has had to give up teaching at Prague's Academy of Art. He is not allowed to exhibit and has been pushed to the sidelines of interest and lucrative commissions. He and his ceramicist wife (Eva Holubová) and two sons live in a small apartment on the outskirts of Prague. Míla Brecka (Jaroslav Dusek), the school principal, and his family stand in stark contrast to the Máras. Comrade Míla and his ambitious wife (Vilma Cibulková), Bedrich's fellow student from the Academy, have gone with the socialist flow for years. They find justification for their behavior in the usual words: 'Someones got to swim along with them to make things better; someones got to make that sacrifice!'

"I don't get how I can be forty-five next year, when I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up!" The story begins with Erica's (Ivana Chýlková) forty-fourth birthday where she fails to receive the biggest bouquet of flowers she can imagine, but she does get a nice good wish card from her ex-sister-in-law (Zuzana Bydzovská) , an embarrassing message in a radio show from her ex-husband, cream for wrinkles from her gay friend Richard (Ondrej Sokol) and a striptease artiste from her unfathomable mother (Zuzana Krónerová). She places the good wish card on show and, even if she curses herself for it, she is moved to tears, and the present in the shape of the striptease-artiste is immediately bagged by Richard. Thus appears the successful life of Erica Oskarová, the star of the program 'Before and After'. Erica has almost everything - her own TV program, a renowned hairdressing salon, a large flat with a terrace, and freedom. But with each year that goes past she yearns more and more for the one thing she does not have - a child. And that is how our film starts...

In the land of King Dobromil (Josef Somr) honest labor, decency, honesty and respect among people has become a thing of the past. Instead the country is gradually succumbing to Hell's force and, thus, those who have some remnants of decency prefer to flee. Slightly befuddled herbalist Apollonia (Iva Janzurová) has a dream that the land is rescued by an unknown 'saviour' who arrives with on an ass and marries Annie (Tatiana Pauhofová), the king's daughter. But who will believe this mad herbalist with her 'magical' herbs that often cause more chaos than benefit? When things are at their worst in the country, the king signs his soul away to Hell and the Government is taken over by his base Minister (Jirí Lábus). At this time there arrives in the Kingdom an inconspicuous happy dreamer Philip (Stepán Kubista).

The plot of the successful Czech fairy-tale film The Princess from the Mill begged to be continued. While it seems that happiness has settled in at the mill for good after Eliska and Jindrich get married, this is actually not the case. The lord prince will not let their joy continue because he hasn't yet stopped thinking about the beautiful Eliska. He and his servant Jean concoct a bit of subterfuge: they send Jindrich off to fight the Turks. But luckily Eliska and her infant daughter Terinka have allies living with them at the mill - a clever and merrily devilish imp and a water goblin.

  • Kamenák (2003)

    15. Kamenák

    20031h 40m
    3.2 (772)
A comedy that whisks the viewer off to the quiet Southern Bohemian town of Kamenákov, where an array of typical Czech characters and archetypal families live life to an unvarying rhythm. The Nováks are a good example: the father (Václav Vydra) is on the police force, his wife (Jana Paulová) is a teacher, their daughter studies nursing, and nine-year-old Pepícek is a motormouth commenting on everything that happens. Imagine then the kid's surprise when two representatives of the English nobility arrive in order to claim the local palace (recovered through the post-Revolution restitution process). Small towns keep no secrets; soon everyone knows that the new lord of the manor has come to search for the treasure his father allegedly stashed away. And this juicy tidbit whets the appetites of the three local mafiosi in particular: a hardened criminal, the nouveau-rich Khon (Josef Laufer), and the town's dandy of a mayor.

A sequel to the light summer comedy. The castle's miraculous blue spring, the waters of which had irrefutable erectile effects, has disappeared as quickly as it began. Actually, it hasn't disappeared; it has just gone elsewhere: to the home of old Mrs. Kropácková, whose incredible thirst has awakened a 20-year lust. The town's younger men are in danger; many others end up as rape victims on a psychiatrist's couch, and Officer Pepa Novák (Václav Vydra) has his hands full. The castle owner certainly won't allow "his" spring to be snatched away from him, and the local head doctor, who has already pictured himself as the world's exclusive supplier of "Liquid Viagra," is beside himself with rage.

  • Kamenák 3 (2005)

    17. Kamenák 3

    20051h 41m
    2.5 (523)
The third in a series of clamorous comedies about the everyday tribulations of the inhabitants of the Southern Bohemian town of Kamenákov. A Romany family moves into Police Chief Pepa's (Václav Vydra) neighborhood. Leo Khon (Josef Laufer), the richest man in Kamenákov, owns a soccer team made of friends and acquaintances. They play miserably, however, managing to lose to the worst of all teams: the Boulders of Little Rock. Khon's mother-in-law refuses to ignore such a waste of family funds and bets her son-in-law that she, who knows absolutely nothing about soccer, can put together a team which will pulverize his freeloaders. And why not, since Romany boys are practically born wearing soccer shoes? The stakes are high and each team is promised a special reward for winning.
