Two little girls disappear into the woods the day that their parents were killed. When they are found 5 years later and begin a new life, they find that someone or something still wants to tuck them in at night.
    DirectorAndy MuschiettiStarsJessica ChastainNikolaj Coster-WaldauMegan Charpentier
4K digital projection, UA La Cañada 8, La Cañada, CA

Like Insidious a couple years back, Mama starts out as a straight-forward haunted house movie, then rides off the rails into a sort of "magic realism", here crossed with Gothic romance. Not so much scary, but genuinely sad at points. It doesn't all work, but there's enough experimentation & fresh ideas to ensure the Muschietti siblings are a dynamic director/producer duo to watch.

Very cute movie. Reminds me of Safety Not Guaranteed in that it's a straight-ahead cute meet story couched in genre conventions, rather than an all-out genre film with romantic elements. Which is just fine - the leads are cute, Rob Corddry is hilarious & the overall feel is warm (no pun intended).

    Season 4

Honestly, they should have ended Fringe with the poignant, clean break that closed out Season 3. While there were some good ideas & fun moments this season (porcupine people!), I found myself frequently infuriated by this cuckoo bananas season that seemed to change the rules & villains at every turn. But since Season 5 is an abbreviated season, I may as well finish it off when it hits Blu-Ray in May.

Strange, charming story. Thanks to Jon - or perhaps I should say Jon's "Republican cinephile" parents - for the recommendation!

DirectorBrian De PalmaStarsKevin CostnerSean ConneryRobert De Niro
Careens wildly between earnest performance from Kevin Costner & excessive theatricality from De Palma & everyone else. Not unlike bootleg hooch, it had its fun moments but by the end I was a little sick & the morning after I remember very little.

An 1840s slaveowner trains one of his slaves to be a bare-knuckle fighter.
    DirectorRichard FleischerStarsJames MasonSusan GeorgePerry King
Turgid antebellum drama with a spotty legacy. Based on a blockbuster novel, the film proved to be a hit, but was almost immediately buried afterward for its frank (& unfortunately, historically accurate) depictions of abuse in the daily running of a slave-breeding plantation. If anything, the film is too plain; while the slice of life is despicable by any sense of modern decency or morality, the actual story of a dysfunctional husband & wife who take on not-so-secret slave lovers because they can't trust each other is dry & wooden. Some would say that sparks a wildfire of awkward camp, I find it more interesting to discuss than to watch. Though it'd make a hell of a counterpoint screened alongside GONE WITH THE WIND.
