Young poet Heinrich wishes to conquer the inevitability of death through love, yet is unable to convince his skeptical cousin Marie to join him in a suicide pact. It is whilst coming to terms with this refusal, ineffably distressed by his cousin's insensitivity to the depth of his feelings, that Heinrich meets Henriette, the wife of a business acquaintance. Heinrich's subsequent offer to the beguiling young woman at first holds scant appeal, that is until Henriette discovers she is suffering from a terminal illness

Sandra is a factory worker who discovers that her workmates have opted for a EUR1,000 bonus in exchange for her dismissal. She has only a weekend to convince her colleagues to give up their bonuses in order to keep her job.Better than Kid With a Bike but another typical Dardennes plot that is hard to digest. Hard to put stock in this working-class yarn when the stakes are so preposterously high and the contrivances so incredulous. At least it had brevity and economical editing going for it, unlike Mr. Turner.
- DirectorAbel FerraraStarsWillem DafoeNinetto DavoliRiccardo ScamarcioA kaleidoscopic look at the last day of Italian filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini in 1975.
- DirectorMike LeighStarsTimothy SpallPaul JessonDorothy AtkinsonJ.M.W. Turner, an unconventional British painter, goes down memory lane and recalls his romantic relationship with a seaside landlady and the various accolades he received for his works of art.In such a lackluster year for film, I am not surprised Mr. Turner stood out as much as it did, and popped up on so many year-end lists. That doesn't change the fact that this is middling Mike Leigh at best; at two and a half hours, Leigh tries to do too much with too little, and the film begins to drag. It could've been an 8/10 if it had been trimmed down to a concise 2 hours. With such a cipher for a character, and such unremarkable, unstylized filmmaking, there is simply not enough to hold the viewer's rapt interest as the movie meanders its way through Turner's decidedly unspectacular, un-cinematic life. In fact, I am not sure what attracted Leigh to this material in the first place.
