"The time is now, a numbing and timeless present of hospital stays, bureaucratic questioning, and wandering through remembered spaces... and suddenly it is also then, the mid '70s and the time of Portugal's Carnation Revolution, when Ventura got into a knife fight with his friend Joaquim." This is the synopsis from the press notes. The film is a sequel of sorts to Costa's "Colossal Youth" with Ventura again playing himself.

Berlin, the Romantic Era. Young poet Heinrich wishes to conquer the inevitability of death through love, yet is unable to convince his skeptical cousin Marie to join him in a suicide pact. It is whilst coming to terms with this refusal, ineffably distressed by his cousin's insensitivity to the depth of his feelings, that Heinrich meets Henriette, the wife of a business acquaintance. Heinrich's subsequent offer to the beguiling young woman at first holds scant appeal, that is until Henriette discovers she is suffering from a terminal illness

Better than Kid With a Bike but another typical Dardennes plot that is hard to digest. Hard to put stock in this working-class yarn when the stakes are so preposterously high and the contrivances so incredulous. At least it had brevity and economical editing going for it, unlike Mr. Turner.

J.M.W. Turner, an unconventional British painter, goes down memory lane and recalls his romantic relationship with a seaside landlady and the various accolades he received for his works of art.
    DirectorMike LeighStarsTimothy SpallPaul JessonDorothy Atkinson
In such a lackluster year for film, I am not surprised Mr. Turner stood out as much as it did, and popped up on so many year-end lists. That doesn't change the fact that this is middling Mike Leigh at best; at two and a half hours, Leigh tries to do too much with too little, and the film begins to drag. It could've been an 8/10 if it had been trimmed down to a concise 2 hours. With such a cipher for a character, and such unremarkable, unstylized filmmaking, there is simply not enough to hold the viewer's rapt interest as the movie meanders its way through Turner's decidedly unspectacular, un-cinematic life. In fact, I am not sure what attracted Leigh to this material in the first place.
