A revolution breaks out, caused by a financial crisis, business intrigues and corresponding natural disasters. Alexander flees from the uprising in the capital to Uncle Vanya's farm in the countryside. There Alexander and his beautiful wife Elena cause further chaos with Alexander's business ideas. Astrof is an experienced physician who performs his job conscientiously, but has lost all idealism and spends much of his time drinking. The presence of Jelena introduces a bit of sexual tension into the household. Astrof and Uncle Vanja both fall in love with Jelena; she spurns them both. Meanwhile, Sonja is in love with Astrof, who fails even to notice her. Finally, when the professor announces he wants to sell the estate, Vanja, whose admiration for the man died with his sister, tries to kill him.

Adaptation of Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya" set in rural Australia in the 1920's. Jack Dickens and his niece Sally run the family farm to support brother-in-law Alexander as a (supposedly brilliant) literary critic in London. It depicts the weariness, the frustrations and pain of large segments of Israeli society, their love to the land and to one another, their dreams and their hope.
