A Jewish family where the father has strayed from the faith, the grandfather clings to the faith, and the daughter seeks her identity in faith, struggle with their place in the world and amongst each other.

It is 1970, Brazil. The countdown to the Football World Cup in Mexico has begun, and ten year old Mauro's parents are leaving on a special 'vacation'. Mauro is to stay with his grandfather in Sao Paolo, many miles from home, and he has been told what to tell people who ask questions. His parents drop him off outside granddad's apartment block and drive away. This film explores what happens when the Jewish Community takes responsibility for an abandoned boy who knows nothing of his Jewish heritage. Based on the life of the Director, Cao Hamburger.

Based on a true story, this tells the story of a father who feels that there is no evidence to support faith in God, and who has disowned his brothers, who continue to believe in God, and of his son who runs to them out of need when he learns that his mother is dying.

A very touching set of personal stories set against a wider commentary. The stories of Dvir and his mother Miri, and the people who surround them are told through the eyes of Dvir, who is eleven or twelve years old at the start, and thirteen at the end. This is important to realise, because the focus is on how the stories, and the lives, impinge on Dvir's existence. Tomer Steinhof, as Dvir, gives a beautiful and screen-commanding performance, while Roni Yudkevitz's Miri is understated and devastatingly realistic. This film lays bare the impact that the impersonal regime at social collective agricultural Kibbutzes can have on somebody's sense of person. Watch this film. Love Miri. Love Dvir. Hate injustice.
