Broncho Billy, on a pilgrimage, pulls up at a small tavern and takes a room there for the night. The pretty daughter of the tavern-keeper has many sweethearts, but the father, fearing he will lose his daughter, starts a row with them, wounding one seriously. Broncho Billy takes the wounded man's part and makes the tavern-keeper provide a bed for him, while the doctor is sent for. The others are determined to lynch the tavern-keeper, but are prevented from doing so by Broncho Billy, who, however, declares that if the girl's sweetheart dies, he will turn her father over to the wounded man's pals. Luckily, the young man recovers and the old tavern-keeper is persuaded to give the young couple his blessing.

Broncho Bill of Snakeville, is on one of his sprees. Loaded down with all kinds of artillery, he comes up Main Street, firing both pistols. He first visits the town bar and chases everybody out; he breaks into the hotel and causes a panic there; breaks up a prayer meeting; puts an English tourist to flight; grabs the boot off of "Alkali" Ike's foot and shoots at it in the air. Finally, tired of his sport, he borrows a horse and starts for home, shortly after to be pursued by the sheriff and his posse. Bill is asleep when they arrive and they have little difficulty in effecting his capture. In the meantime Broncho's mother arrives and starts for Broncho's place of residence. The "San Francisco Kid," her companion, enters first and informs the sheriff of the pitiable and lamented arrival of this trying moment of Broncho's mother. The sheriff finally agrees to exchange places for the time being with Broncho, and pinning the star to Broncho's chest, locks himself to Broncho and when the mother is brought in her son is introduced to her as the sheriff of Snake County. The mother then turns on the real sheriff and points out her son as a good example, telling him to mend his ways. She then gives the "bad" man a Bible which she had brought for her son, and tells him to read and try to be as good as Will. Only until Broncho's mother returns to the east does Broncho relinquish his star and after that the bad man is turned loose on his promise to keep to the straight and narrow way.

The sheriff of Rattlesnake County, Nevada, has received a notification from the district attorney to post dodgers along the highways, announcing that the notorious outlaw and bad man, Broncho Billy, will be given his liberty and no prosecution of his crimes if he surrenders to the sheriff within seven days. It is a few days before Christmas, and after the sheriff has executed the order in regard to Broncho Billy, he goes to his home, where he finds his wife writing a letter to their daughter, who is at college. Christmas Day we see the young lady take the stagecoach for the long, but picturesque and pleasant ride over the mountains. Although Broncho Billy has found one of the notices, appraising him of the mercy that the law has offered him, he regards it with contempt, for on this very day he has made plans to waylay the stagecoach, knowing that on Christmas Day it must be loaded with rich booty. At the halfway house the stage pulls up for a minute to allow the driver and his partner to stop and wish the proprietor a Merry Christmas. The girl is left alone to watch the horses. When they are inside, a number of roistering cowboys come out from the inn, wildly shooting their guns, and the horses, becoming panic-stricken, break and run at full gallop down the turnpike. Broncho Billy is waiting for the stage and when it dashes by with its fair driver he realizes that the horses are running away. Forgetting his former criminal intentions, Broncho springs into his saddle, and starts in pursuit of the flying coach. After a long ride, he reaches it, springs from his horse to the driver's box and takes the reins from the girl's hands. He thus saves her life and the stage driver, and others now riding up, persuades him to go on with them and eat dinner at the girl's home, to which they, too, have been invited. The incident results in Broncho's complete redemption and he swears off outlawry for good.

An old soldier on the frontier, the father of a dozen children, a staunch patriot himself, brings these children up with rigid military training. He conducts his household as a garrison with strict discipline, drills, etc. On the evening of the day the picture opens, the oldest boy wishes to go out to make a call on his sweetheart, but the old soldier commands the boy to stay at home. This command the boy is loath to obey, but his father, himself brought up under rigid military rule, rails at his insubordination of the boy, and threatens that if the boy goes out he goes for good. The boy does go, however, and returning finds sure enough the door barred against him. Sad and homeless he wanders, but it is fortunate he goes for the next morning he views from a distance a tribe of Indians starting out on the warpath. With this lead, he with valiant effort, secures the aid of a troop of patrolling soldiers, who rescue the boy's family and sweetheart just in time. The military training imbued by the old soldier stood in good, as it was the means of holding the Indians at bay until help arrived.

A wagon train heading west across the great desert runs out of water, and is attacked by Indians. One man -- their last hope -- is sent out to find water.

Tom Harper, a young sheepman, lately arrived in the country with his mother, is warned by an unsigned note that "this is a cattleman's country, and not good for a sheepman's health." Tom goes to the sheriff, armed with the note, and a revolver, and tells this officer that he is not looking for trouble, but they had better let him alone. Tom, on his way home, is fired upon, and returning the shot, wounds one of the cattlemen. Tom turns his horse, and riding to his sweetheart's home, takes refuge there. The wounded man is carried to Tom's home, when his mother, unaware that the cattleman had sought her son's life, cares for him. In the meantime, a number of the cattlemen have trailed Tom to his sweetheart's home, where they lay in wait for him. Later, Tom is taken in hand by the sheriff and looked up in jail to prevent a lynching. But Buck Weaver, the ring-leader of the cattlemen, who was shot by Tom, learning that his nurse is the mother of the man he tried to kill, goes to the sheriff and makes a full confession that Tom shot him in self-defense.

When Indians attack a white settlement, a brave kidnaps a white baby to give to his wife as a replacement for their dead baby. The white mother goes to the Indian camp to look for her child and is captured by the Indians who plan to torture her. The settlers attack the Indian camp, destroying it completely and killing the braves, while the Indian wife returns the baby to the white woman and allows her to escape. The Indian wife mourns her baby at its grave, unaware of the destruction of the Indian camp.

Lieutenant Parker reports for duty to Major Wilkins, commanding Ft. Sill, where Geronimo is a prisoner. Parker quickly wins the love of Pauline, the major's daughter, and the undying hatred of Captain Gray. The captain plans to release Geronimo in the dead of the night, throwing the blame on Parker. This he successfully does by obtaining, through an accident in the billiard room, possession of a letter from an Eastern friend to Lieutenant Parker. By tearing out a portion of this letter reading, "of course Geronimo's escape would mean an advancement to you," he successfully deceives everyone. But meantime Parker has been hurriedly detailed to find Geronimo; so Gray is sent out with a second detachment to overtake both Geronimo and Parker and make them both prisoners. Through a friendly orderly, Pauline learns of the trick. She hastens after Parker to warn him, but falls into Geronimo's clutches. The lieutenant is himself captured by Geronimo and, with Pauline, makes his escape. Later, he rescues Captain Gray and his command from certain death, and is rewarded by being made prisoner by Captain Gray. But all is explained at the formal court-martial, when Pauline rushes in with the other portion of the letter.

The brutality of Mrs. Cardigan's husband excites comment, and one day a miner named Norton intercedes on her behalf. Norton agrees to take Mrs. Cardigan away from her vicious husband, but they are overtaken. In trying to escape with her half-dressed baby, a bullet grazes her temple and she falls unconscious on the ground; Norton is killed in the skirmish. Indians, hearing the shots, attack the whites and take the baby, leaving Mrs. Cardigan for dead. The wife is found by the soldiers and is taken to the fort, where she recovers, and eventually falls in love and marries the colonel. Twenty years later her now-grown son is appointed chief of the Indians after the old chief dies. The redmen, thinking the pin that he wears bearing his name--John--a charm, have named him Running Elk. One day Running Elk calls at the fort to sell furs, and has an altercation with a drunken soldier. In the fight that follows the soldier is killed and Running Elk is sentenced to death. The mother meets the Indian and learns that he is her son, but does not reveal her identity. When she hears that the Indian is to be shot, she affects his escape. She is discovered by the colonel and, in a dramatic scene, tells him of her past life, and he forgives her. Smarting under the indignities he has received. Running Elk incites his tribe to war with the soldiers. Seeing that the soldiers are losing, the mother decides to tell Running Elk who she is; but in climbing the stockade, she is struck by a bullet. With her dying breath she impresses upon her son that she is his mother. A truce is declared and she is buried with impressive Indian rites.
