  • 20 titles
  • Max von Sydow in The Exorcist (1973)

    1. The Exorcist

    19732h 2mR83Metascore
    8.1 (482K)
When a mysterious entity possesses a young girl, her mother seeks the help of two Catholic priests to save her life.
DirectorWilliam FriedkinStarsEllen BurstynMax von SydowLinda Blair
To this day, the movie scares the dickens out of me. Horribly robbed at Oscar time, this movie was deserving of every award out there.
  • Halloween (1978)

    2. Halloween

    19781h 31mR90Metascore
    7.7 (326K)
Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois, to kill again.
DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsDonald PleasenceJamie Lee CurtisTony Moran
The classic. There is only one Halloween. Directed by John Carpenter, I was actually relieved when the first girl finally got killed!
  • The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

    3. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

    19741h 23mR91Metascore
    7.4 (201K)
Five friends head out to rural Texas to visit the grave of a grandfather. On the way they stumble across what appears to be a deserted house, only to discover something sinister within. Something armed with a chainsaw.
    DirectorTobe HooperStarsMarilyn BurnsEdwin NealAllen Danziger
Could not sleep for a week after I saw this one (the ORIGINAL). Tobe Hooper proves great editing makes you see things you really didn't. Tense, sick, and scary as all get-out...yet there's very little blood. I thought Marilyn Burns would NEVER stop screaming!
  • Bridget Hoffman in The Evil Dead (1981)

    4. The Evil Dead

    19811h 25mNC-1771Metascore
    7.4 (244K)
Five friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons.
    DirectorSam RaimiStarsBruce CampbellEllen SandweissRichard DeManincor
The original has them ALL beat! Tried to watch it at a drive-in (alone) and had to leave. Finally rented it when it came out. Mind-blowing for me and very, very scary!
  • The Devil's Rejects (2005)

    5. The Devil's Rejects

    20051h 47mR54Metascore

The murderous, backwoods Firefly family take to the road to escape the vengeful Sheriff Wydell, who is not afraid of being as ruthless as his target.
DirectorRob ZombieStarsSid HaigSheri Moon ZombieBill Moseley
Written and directed by Rob Zombie, this is one of the most vicious movies I've ever seen. Bill Mosley's infamous quote "I am the Devil and I'm here to do the Devil's work." And, boy, does he ever.
  • Marilyn Eastman, Duane Jones, and Judith Ridley in Night of the Living Dead (1968)

    6. Night of the Living Dead

    19681h 36mR89Metascore
    7.8 (146K)
A ragtag group of Pennsylvanians barricade themselves in an old farmhouse to remain safe from a horde of flesh-eating ghouls that are ravaging the Northeast of the United States.
DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsDuane JonesJudith O'DeaKarl Hardman
Saw this one at the drive-in and crawled in bed quickly pulling the covers over my head. Shot in black and white, I had never seen cannabalism in a movie. I'll never forget it.
  • Sissy Spacek in Carrie (1976)

    7. Carrie

    19761h 38mR86Metascore
    7.4 (220K)
Carrie White, a shy, friendless teenage girl who is sheltered by her domineering, religious mother, unleashes her telekinetic powers after being humiliated by her classmates at her senior prom.
DirectorBrian De PalmaStarsSissy SpacekPiper LaurieAmy Irving
Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie give riveting performances as christian zealot Margaret White and her daughter Carrie, who has a knack for making objects move. The remake cannot touch the original, as is usually the case. The prom scene is so memorable...and not for what you might think.
  • Heather Langenkamp in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

    8. A Nightmare on Elm Street

    19841h 31mR76Metascore
    7.4 (280K)

    DirectorWes CravenStarsHeather LangenkampJohnny DeppRobert Englund
Another Wes Craven's masterpiece, he created a monster that came after you in your dreams. What's scarier than that?
  • Sandra Peabody in The Last House on the Left (1972)

    9. The Last House on the Left

    19721h 24mR68Metascore

Two teenage girls heading to a rock concert for one's birthday try to score marijuana in the city, where they are kidnapped and brutalized by a gang of psychopathic convicts.
    DirectorWes CravenStarsSandra PeabodyLucy GranthamDavid Hess
Wes Craven's original masterpiece was like repeatedly being kicked in the gut. And remember (keep repeating to yourself) "it's only a movie; it's only a movie..."
  • Anthony Perkins, John Gavin, Janet Leigh, and Heather Dawn May in Psycho (1960)

    10. Psycho

Believe it or not, my sister took me to see this when I was only SEVEN!! Still a classic, and few people played crazy better than Tony Perkins.

    20121h 50mR53Metascore
    6.8 (302K)

    DirectorScott DerricksonStarsEthan HawkeJuliet RylanceJames Ransone
At the time, one of the better horror movies to be released in quite a while. Ethan Hawke plays a writer who risks everything in order to try and solve a mystery surrounding the house he moved his family into.
  • Jeepers Creepers (2001)

    12. Jeepers Creepers

Dario Argento's only masterpiece, Suspiria had it all: great lighting, great colors, a kick-butt soundtrack, and some very violent moments.
  • Vinnie Jones in The Midnight Meat Train (2008)

    15. The Midnight Meat Train

    20081h 40mR58Metascore
    6.0 (74K)
A photographer's obsessive pursuit of dark subject matter leads him into the path of a serial killer who stalks late night commuters, ultimately butchering them in the most gruesome ways.
    DirectorRyûhei KitamuraStarsVinnie JonesBradley CooperLeslie Bibb
This never received much wide-release and that's unfortunate. Bradley Cooper plays a photographer searching for "real" photographs. He gets way more than he bargained for.
  • Alison Lohman in Drag Me to Hell (2009)

    16. Drag Me to Hell

    20091h 39mPG-1383Metascore
    6.6 (225K)
An ambitious loan officer must find a way to shatter a curse that threatens her soul with damnation.
    DirectorSam RaimiStarsAlison LohmanJustin LongRuth Livier
Director Sam Raimi demonstrates how you don't need tons of blood and gore to scare someone. Loads of fun and has many "gotcha'" scenes.
  • Griffin Dunne and David Naughton in An American Werewolf in London (1981)

    17. An American Werewolf in London

    19811h 37mR55Metascore

American college students David Kessler and Jack Goodman on a walking tour of Britain are attacked by a werewolf that none of the locals will admit exists. Jack dies. David recovers in a hospital, where he has nightmares.
    DirectorJohn LandisStarsDavid NaughtonJenny AgutterJoe Belcher
Yes, it can be considered somewhat slapstick, but hearing that awful sound alone on the moors makes for some scary times.
  • Juan Fernández, Madeline Zima, and Josh Stewart in The Collector (2009)

    18. The Collector

    20091h 30mR29Metascore
    6.3 (77K)

Simply savage and brutal. Had not heard anything about it before I saw it, and I was completely knocked out!
  • Natalie Mendoza, Shauna Macdonald, Saskia Mulder, Alex Reid, Nora-Jane Noone, and MyAnna Buring in The Descent (2005)

    19. The Descent

    7.2 (262K)
A caving expedition goes horribly wrong, as the explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators.
    DirectorNeil MarshallStarsShauna MacdonaldNatalie MendozaAlex Reid
Another movie that never got the attention it deserved, this one starts out as innocently as a movie can, takes a U-turn, and you are right in the nightmare with the rest of these women!
  • Drew Barrymore in Scream (1996)

    20. Scream

    19961h 51mR66Metascore
    7.4 (422K)
A masked killer targets a past victim's daughter.
    DirectorWes CravenStarsNeve CampbellCourteney CoxDavid Arquette
This is a new addition to my list. It appears because every time I have watched it, it gets scarier and scarier. Supposedly based on true events that occurred in England, "The Conjuring 2" is guaranteed to give you nightmares. All the actors were very believable, and I cannot wait for the next installment in this series.
