The movie is based on a true story about the confession of a police constable about gunning down a Naxalite (Arikkad Varghese) in a fake encounter as per the order of his superiors in 1970.

Dibyanath Chatterji, his bank-employed wife, Sujata, and only child, a son, Brati, live a middle-class existence in Calcutta, West Bengal, India, circa early 1970s. Sujata is a quiet, devout Hindu, religious, and compassionate woman, and Brati has finished his school and is now attending college. His parents are proud of him, and keep track of his progress. Then their world is shattered during the early hours, when they are informed by the police that Brati has been killed. Dibyanath and Sujata go to identify Brati's body, mourn, lament inconsolably. They know now that their lives will never be the same again - for by the police they will be called the mother and father corpse No. 1084. Sujata struggles to understand Brati's passing, meets his friends one by one, comes to know that Brati had a girlfriend, Nandini Mitra, and that's when she finds out that Brati was part of a rebel group often referred to as "Naxalbari", a militant leftist group. As she delves deeper and deeper into Brati's former life, she begins to understand her son's struggle, and decides to continue to further this. What Sujata does not know is her and Dibyanath's lives are in danger, and they well turn up dead and end up as numbered corpses in a police morgue.

He was successful neither in his career nor he could he become a good family man or husband. Still he was an artist who never compromised for personal gain, fame or profit. The story of the film starts in 1969 and deals with Ritwik Ghatak's time spent in a mental asylum. It shows Nilkantha being admitted to mental asylum under the supervision of Doctor S. P. Mukherjee. S. P. Mukherjee learns that the Prime Minister of India knows Nilkantha and is fond of his works and may request the hospital authority to take special care of him. In the hospital a police officer sees Nilkantha and tells Doctor Mukherjee that he is a wasted drunkard. Another patient of hospital mocks Nilkantha as "disgraced intellectual". Even he was undergoing treatment in the hospitals, he writes a play and stages it with other asylum patients. The film shows how Durga (Nilkantha's wife) wants to leave him saying "separation is essential". Nilkantha witnessed partition of Bengal and its devastating effect and in his youth became attracted towards communism. Throughout the film Nilkantha's mental agony, struggles, inner contradictions, disappointments as well as financial troubles faced by him are shown. He clearly tells, it is not possible for him to make entertaining or commercial films. During a discussion Nilkantha asks Doctor Mukherjee that should a man perfome mujra at a time when the society is burning? He also tells Doctor Mukherjee that he is a "people's artist" and that is his job. The film also shows the atmosphere of Bengal during Tebhaga and Naxalite movements. A scene has been shown in the film where a book named "How to be a good communist?" is burning. This scene symbolises Ghatak's dissatisfaction with India's communist politics. When Durga tells Nilkantha that they don't have a single rupee to run the family, Nilkantha readily replies, it is not money but it is one's work which will remain forever.

Rupi is typical aggressive trible girl, wildcat like manners and irrespective of free trible culture where sex before marriage is treated as part of education, nobody proposes to her knowing her love and devotion to Kanna. Kannas brother Ghisu is one aggressive and hot-tempered with who is illiterate and is slowly getting attracted towards Naxalites. Kanna does not like this. Kanna goes back to city to complete his final year but not before warning his loved ones that Naxalisam is not good for them. Due to Rangers atrocities and high handedness, Ghisu becomes a Naxalite. Rupi who is totally devoted to Kanna does try to convince Ghisu. Ghisu firm on his views. Ranger and Inspector Shinde are desperately searching Ghisu. In the process they have tortured villagers and something dreadful happens and Rupi disappears. When Kanna comes back from Nagpur both the persons he loved the most Rupi and Ghisu are not there for him. He is under the impression that Rupi is dead. He makes all efforts to bring Ghisu back but does not succeed. Actually Rupi is not dead. She has also become a Naxalite. She knows that Kanna is back but now she does not want to go back to him. Naxalites are becoming more and more popular among tribles because of their capacity to give instant justice and more and more youths are joining them. Ghisu and Rupi are now promoted as commanders of their new Dalam. On the other hand, Govt. has taken serious note of the situation and special task force is sent to the jungle to deal with Naxal problem. War between Kanna's non-violence and Rajayya violence begins. Both, Ghisu and Rupi are in a situation; where on one side is their love for Kanna and on the other side is the conviction to fight for justice.
