  • Eiji Funakoshi and Mako Midori in Blind Beast (1969)

    1. Blind Beast

    19691h 26m
    7.0 (4.2K)
A blind sculptor and his mother kidnap a young model.
    DirectorYasuzô MasumuraStarsEiji FunakoshiMako MidoriNoriko Sengoku
The cover of the DVD I have of this one says it would give Dali nightmares and thats probobly fair. Art, blindness, sexual obsession, masochism, even Oedipal vibes, all played out in or around one of the greatest Surrealist sets of all time. Profoundly disturbing erotic nightmare masterpiece.
  • Mickey Rooney in The Manipulator (1971)

    2. The Manipulator

    19711h 25mR
    3.9 (351)
An insane Hollywood makeup man kidnaps a woman, keeps her prisoner in his warehouse full of props.
    DirectorYabo YablonskyStarsMickey RooneyLuana AndersKeenan Wynn
Mickey Rooney cuts loose with a freakishly convincing turn as a demented film-maker taunting an actress with his shattered personality. Also contains stunning set and sound design, one of those films that leaves you questioning your own sanity and insightful in its portrait of the artistic temperament at its nightmarish logical extreme.
  • Save the Green Planet! (2003)

    3. Save the Green Planet!

    20031h 58mNot Rated70Metascore
    7.2 (9.3K)
Byeong-gu believes that the world is on the verge of an alien invasion, and sets out to save the world.
    DirectorJang Joon-hwanStarsShin Ha-kyunBaek Yoon-shikHwang Jung-min
Perhaps the most conventional film on this list, this black comedy sci fi horror/thriller hybrid is a remarkably ballsy genre bending piece of work wit moving undercurrents to the insanity and terrific performances to give weight to the typically Korean melodrama
  • Eden and After (1970)

    4. Eden and After

    19701h 33mUnrated
    6.4 (1.5K)
A group of French students are drawn into the psychological and sexual games of a mysterious Dutchman. Once they sample his "fear powder" the students experience a series of hallucinations.
    DirectorAlain Robbe-GrilletStarsCatherine JourdanPierre ZimmerRichard Leduc
Alain Robbe Grillet with his usual concerns of S&M, paint or blood on beautiful unclothed women and fractured narrative holding skillfully shaded theme. Though a bit tricksy, this account of bourgeouis students coming to the dark roots of their sex and violence fantasies via fear powder is a delightful mind bender that for all its oddities is actually an interesting critique of pretension.
  • Spiral (2000)

    5. Spiral

    20001h 30m62Metascore
    6.1 (9.7K)
The inhabitants of a small Japanese town become increasingly obsessed with and tormented by spirals.
    DirectorHiguchinskyStarsEriko HatsuneFhi FanHinako Saeki
I could easily populate this list entirely with Japanese films as they seem to hold a world monopoly on weirdness, but of the many candidates Uzumaki is one of my worthiest faves. A heartily nutsoid piece of what might be termed "spiralsploitation", this one takes the slow burning intrigue vibe that tends to characterise Asian horror but cuts it loose from psychological foundations or contrived trickery and simply has weird stuff going on that gets weirder and weirder as the film progresses. Great fun weirdness in short.
  • The Cars That Ate Paris (1974)

    6. The Cars That Ate Paris

    19741h 28mPG
    5.6 (4.7K)
The small town of Paris, Australia deliberately causes car accidents, then sells/salvages all valuables from the wrecks as a means of economy.
    DirectorPeter WeirStarsTerry CamilleriJohn MeillonKevin Miles
Australia is no stranger to unusual genre films and this is probobly my favorite of the weirder ones, a tale of innocent caught in rural weirdness that does a very fine job of actually developing its weird community. A town as parasite with John Meillon excellent as its charismatic Mayor, this is a fine example of genuinely unsettling black comedy.
  • Devil Story (1986)

    7. Devil Story

    19861h 16m
    3.7 (904)
A deformed man living with his mother in the countryside roams the woods killing indiscriminately. A couple spend the night nearby, and the wife goes through a nightmarish experience involving a black horse, a mummy, and the deformed man.
    DirectorBernard LaunoisStarsVéronique RenaudMarcel PortierCatherine Day
There's a murderous retard in army garb, a horse that may be the Devil, a spooky old castle and more, with little to no logical connection between any of it. Moves like a breeze though and the camera lingers in nicely Fulci-esque fashion on some gnarly inept gore. Something weird is always happening here, and the outcome is pretty fudging awesome.
  • Blood Freak (1972)

    8. Blood Freak

    19721h 26mR
    3.6 (1.9K)
A biker gets a job at a turkey farm and agrees to act as guinea pig for some chemicals that need tested, failing to anticipate the murderous side effects.
DirectorsBrad F. GrinterSteve HawkesStarsSteve HawkesDana CullivanRandy Grinter
This slice of Bible thumping Floridian insanity is justifiably one of the most notorious unhinged schlockers of all time. But something about its combination of ineptitude in every frame with genuinely unsettling scare tactics gives it a comforting approximation of reality to me, or if not reality than a standard vibe of weird 70's schlock that it chiefly surpasses on account of having the scariest monster effect ever. Which is why I rate it lower on the weirdness scale than others, to whom it may well be the nuttiest thing ever.
  • Hex (1973)

    9. Hex

    19731h 32mPG
    4.7 (237)
A group of friends who were World War I flyers ride their motorcycles across America in search of what they believe their generation lost during the war.
    DirectorLeo GarenStarsCristina RainesHilarie ThompsonScott Glenn
An ambient tale of bikers seeking refuge with two sisters of Native American descent, with contrasts of modernity and tradition, baseless fantasy and genuine mysticism skillfully evoked. Far from traditional horror, but charming and weird with a great cast (Scott Glenn, Keith Carradine, Gary Busey and stunning Cristine Raines) and offbeat uplifting finale. A real leftfield charmer.
  • Manos: The Hands of Fate (1966)

    10. Manos: The Hands of Fate

    19661h 10mNot Rated
    1.7 (38K)
A family gets lost on the road and stumbles upon a hidden, underground, devil-worshiping cult led by the fearsome Master and his servant Torgo.
DirectorHarold P. WarrenStarsTom NeymanJohn ReynoldsDiane Adelson
Hal Warren's rampantly amateur direction can be offputting, but this is a great little journey into America's weirdest backwaters, with the tragic John Reynolds superbly twitchy and off key as servant Torgo, Tom Neyman an imposing villain and some interesting shots and designs building to an ending that remains one of the more twisted of its era. A fine work, unjustly derided.
