Ganz selten gibt es Tage, an denen man sowohl die einen als auch die anderen trifft. Und am Ende sich selbst. Eigentlich ist Nick Schauspieler. An diesem verrückten Tag verdient er sich seine Brötchen aber als Clown und hofft im Stau auf bessere Zeiten. Charlie ist eigentlich Mutter von Robin. Im Moment aber sitzt sie in einem Polizeiauto im Stau und soll ins Gefängnis. Verzweifelt sucht sie eine Möglichkeit, wie sie ihren kleinen Robin aus dem Kinderheim holen könnte. Joe ist eigentlich ein Verrückter. An diesem Tag verkleidet er sich als Clown, überfällt Banken und hofft auf eine geile Medienpräsenz. Und Robin ist eigentlich noch ein Kind, das seine Mutter braucht. Pechvogel Nick im Clownskostüm setzt alle Verwechslungen in Gang, weil ihn die beiden ungeschickt-dummen Polizisten Bernauer und Schäfer für den gesuchten Clownräuber halten. Schon sitzt er neben Charlie im Polizeiwagen, während die beiden Gesetzeshüter ihre vermeintliche Beförderung etwas zu ausgelassen feiern. Charlie ergreift die günstige Gelegenheit und fährt mit dem Wagen davon. Wieder Pech für Nick: Er will ja gar nicht fliehen! Doch Charlie ist kompromisslos. Sie will so schnell wie möglich ins Kinderheim, um mit Robin gemeinsam zu fliehen. Nick und Charlie könnten sich einfach trennen und ihrer Wege gehen, wäre da nicht Joe, der eigentliche Bankräuber, der frisch aus einem Irrenhaus entflohen ist. Joe geht es nicht ums Geld. Es macht ihn ausgesprochen wütend, dass ein anderer den Ruhm des sogenannten Clownräubers erntet. Als Charlie endlich über Umwege beim Kinderheim ankommt, ist die Polizei bereits vor Ort. Kommissar Fuchs ist fest davon überzeugt, dass Nick und Charlie Bankraubkomplizen sind und lässt Robin überwachen, um so die Mutter endlich zu schnappen. Nick gelingt es in letzter Minute, die widerborstige Charlie vor der Falle zu bewahren und sich heimlich mit ihr in der Besenkammer des Kinderheims zu verstecken. Beim Warten und Pläneschmieden fangen die beiden an, einander zu verstehen. Doch bis sie sich wirklich näher kommen, geht ein verrückter Tag zu Ende und steht ein langes Jahr bevor.

The year is 1952, in Québec City, Québec. Rachel (Suzanne Clément), sixteen, unmarried, and pregnant, works in the church. Past and present converge in a complex web of intrinque where the answer to the mystery lies.
