The son of a Jewish Cantor must defy the traditions of his religious father in order to pursue his dream of becoming a jazz singer.

A singing waiter and composer (Al Jolson) loves two women (Betty Bronson, Josephine Dunn), conquers Broadway and holds his dying son, singing "Sonny Boy."

Eddie Kehoe is a young vaudeville hoofer who thinks his inability to hit the big time is the fault of stage managers, agents, musicians...everybody but himself. Eddie likes to tell others how good he is, but seldom shows them. Kitty Mayo, an old-time burlesque queen, who is with the McNary Vaudeville Company, advises Eddie to get himself a partner, as his solo abilities can only be stretched so far. He decides to follow her advice and, while in a theatrical supply shop, he sees Rita Carey rehearsing her dancing act that includes a trained duck. Eddie tells Rita he is a good friend of McNary's, and, with him as her partner, her future in show business will be secured. She agrees to join him and Eddie promptly names the act "Eddie Kehoe and Partner". Despite his conceit, Rita likes Eddie, as do others in the troupe, including Cleo a little gold-digger.

A mailman, lives a normal everyday life, until one day, something unexpected happens, and everything he knew changes.

Georgie works in his father's jewelry business, but he wants to be an entertainer. He comes up with a scheme to put on his own show in a theater and show his father that he can be a success, but things don't work out as he planned.

"The Five O'Clock Girl" was a successful Broadway play starring Mary Eaton and Oscar Shaw. Marion Davies' Cosmopolitan Productions bought the rights for the play and filmed it as a feature talkie. The plot revolves around Pat, a shop girl in a cleaners, and a local plumber named Gerry who she falls in love with. Publicity stills from the film show Marion trying on clothes people have brought in for cleaning and doing impersonations of the clothes' owners.

A pair of sisters from the vaudeville circuit try to make it big time on Broadway, but matters of the heart complicate the attempt.

This is RKO's first sound musical. It centers on a pair of vaudevillians who are quite close on and off the stage until a dashing millionaire comes around and begins wooing the female partner.

Nappus, an elderly farmer, resents the fact that his daughter Chloe is married to a lazy layabout named Gummy, who allows Chloe to do all the house and farm work he himself should be doing. Chloe has to care for her two children, Trailia and Chiquapin, while managing all of Gummy's duties as well, and she is worn down by her labors. When Chloe and the child Trailia become dangerously sick, Gummy obtains the services of a Vodou doctor instead of a real medical doctor, with tragic results. Nappus decides he will somehow raise the money to send his grandson Chiquapin to medical school.

Rainbow Ryan adopts Billy.. Rainbow falls in love with Mary Lane, who belatedly discovers Billy is the child of her dead sister. Now living with Mary, Billy runs away to see Rainbow. Mary follows, and she and Rainbow are reunited.

During the Florida land boom, The Marx Brothers run a hotel, auction off some land, thwart a jewel robbery, and generally act like themselves.

Maurice, a humble Parisian junk dealer who sells some of his wares at the Flea market, saves a boy from drowning. The boy's aunt Louise is grateful and wins Maurice's affections, but the lad's grandfather despises him. The jaunty junk man gets a great offer to sing in an important show and launch a theatrical career, but Louise is against it and at length, he must choose between the two.

Lila Beaumont is an understudy in a Broadway musical. Her boyfriend, George Shelby, arrives in New York hoping to take Lila back home with him to marry. George buys a majority interest in the show, planning to fire Lila after she refuses to quit the show. But when Lila goes on in place of the temperamental star, she is a great success and George is able to sell the show back to the original investors at a profit.
