Movies I've Seen in 2018

What’s so interesting about Spielberg’s newest is how on and off it can be. Now, to that point, most often, it manages to be on but there are some things that still don’t work. Some dialogue winds up to be incredibly cheesy, almost prompting a physical reaction from the audience member, wondering if they really heard what they think they just heard. There are also some unusual directorial choices from Spielberg that go along with the cheesiness of the film like unusual zooms or off-putting sequences. However, as I said earlier, what’s so interesting about the film is that, most of the time, the writing and direction is strong. Lines of dialogue are smart and witty and they manage to build strong and likable characters. Spielberg puts together an overall interesting story and does a great job making it encapsulating. The performances are all strong and bring complex, dynamic characters to life, working to distract us from the few aspects of filmmaking that anchor this movie back from being great.
