    When three pinto-riding Wells Fargo messengers are killed, Ranger Johnny is sent, incognito, to Booneville to investigate. He is welcomed by Sheriff Ed Lowery, Wells Fargo agent Ben Williams, the latter's daughter Janet and his son Terry, who supplies horses for the Wells Fargo riders. Johnny tangles with Chet Murdock, a killer, in a saloon fight and also J notices that Mae Star, hotel proprietress, and Terry are outwardly sweethearts. Mae is actually using Terry to get information on the gold shipments, which are then hi-jacked by Murdock and his gang. Johnny, wishing to rest his own horse, borrows a pinto from Terry's corral and, while out riding the express trail, is ambushed by henchman Gus but Johnny shoots Gus instead. The dying outlaw tells Johnny he attacked him because he was riding a pinto of the type used by the express riders when they were carrying gold. Mae and Murdock, realizing the game is up, then decide to rob the Wells Fargo office and flee town. While Mae keeps Terry drunk in her saloon, Murdock kills Ben Williams and loots the Wells Fargo safe. Johnny arrives back in town and arrests the drunken Terry for complicity in the gold robberies. Mae slips Terry a gun and and helps him break jail supposedly to aid him to kill Murdock to avenge his father's death. But she leads him into a trap and Murdock cuts Terry down just as Johnny and the sheriff converge on the saloon.

    June Forbes unexpectedly visits her older sister Daisy Forbes in the town of Silverforks, not aware that the latter is a poker dealer in the Half-Way House gambling saloon owned by Rod Jackson, member of a gang secretly headed by local barber Herkimer Stone. With the aid of henchmen Pepper, Nolan, Diggs and other members of the gang, Daisy conceals her connection with the saloon. Lucky Danvers, who has just arranged a bank loan to develop his Escondido mine, arrives in town and meets Johnny McVey who is seeking his missing cousin Bill. Lucky and Johnny are object of attacks by the outlaws, who want Lucky's mine and who murdered Bill for his money. The town bank operated by Simpson is robbed and Johnny traces Pepper, who has the money, to the barber shop. Because Jackson insists on forcing his attentions on June, Daisy goes to Marshal Wetherby with evidence against the gang. All are rounded up in a gun battle, except Herkimer, who is killed by Jackson. Daisy goes back east with June.

    Rambling cowhand Johnny Mack learns that his friend Henry Blake has been killed, and he agrees to help law-abiding citizens clean up Medicine Flats. This is after he has thwarted an attempt by Yuma and two henchmen to hold up prospector Bodie and jump his unrecorded mining claim. Kansas City Kate, runs the notorious Golden Spur Saloon, and heads the outlaws along with Cameo, a gambler paying to much interest to saloon singer Donna Webster. Donna's warning saves Johnny from being shot by Yuma, after the latter is beaten up by Johnny for molesting an old townsman character. Plans by the outlaws to ship a hoard of money stolen from the miners and settlers is overheard by Bodie from a hideaway in the basement beneath the saloon. Johnny and the vigilantes intercept the stagecoach and the money bag, and obstruct numerous other schemes by the gang. Bodie is shot by Yuma after Cameo discovers his hiding place and Johnny kills Yuma in retaliation. He nips Kate's plans to protect the Golden Spur by hiring the Cherokee Kid and his desperadoes. Donna reveals that she is the daughter of Henry Blake, after Kate and Cameo confess to his slaying. His job done, Johnny again heads for the open road ahead.

Neighboring rancher Tom Lansing (Steve Darrell) offers to help Johnny clear himself from the accusation that he received the stolen money. At the scene of the "accident" in which his uncle died, Johnny finds new evidence and is shot at by Duke (Eddie Parker as Edwin Parker), henchman of the man secretly trying to grab up the land by taking over the mortgages. Joan Travers (Christine McIntyre) is antagonistic toward Johhny when her fiance Stephens goes to jail for the embezzlement to trick the real culprit to relax his guard, so Johnny and Sheriff Burt Wheeler (Pierce Lyden) can bring him to justice. After the sheriff and several others are killed, another real estate agent (Edward Peil as Edward J. Peil) confesses that Lansing is the brains behind the land-grab and murders.

Jamison, also the mayor, swears Johnny in as the town marshal. Johnny lets henchman Slats Harper (Lynton Brent) overhear information about a fictitious gold shipment, and traps some of Steve's men when they attempt a hold-up. Steve packs the jury and his men are set free. Saloon singer Kitty Malone (Claudia Drake), who is in love with Steve, becomes jealous of Flo Vickerk (Christine McIntyre), and warns Johnny that three gunmen have been imported to kill him. Flo tells Steve that Kitty is an informant, and Steve plans a double murder of Kitty and Johnny.

Sandy Hopkins, also a U.S. Marshal, is posing as a cook at the only café in town. Joel Edwards now running the Wells Fargo office after Hilton was killed, and Kate are in love. J. D. Edwards, president of the land-and-cattle company, and step-father to Joel, controls all the interest in Springfield. A number of citizens have been killed for no apparent reason, and Doctor Applegate has sent for Nevada and Sandy to solve the mystery killings. Applegate is killed after he returns from a prospecting trip, but not before he has deposited some of the gold he found in the Wells Fargo safe. J.D. Edwards, in reality the gang leader, means to acquire the property containing the gold that Hilton, originally, and Applegate later found. Nevada and Sandy learn of the location in time to keep the ranchers from selling to Edwards. The latter tries to shoot Nevada, but Joel draws first and kills him. The ranchers are told there is gold on their property, and the whole gang is apprehended.

With an impending election to decide the county seat, Keene is taking no chances on the possibility of Centerville winning the election,and sends for gunman Wade Gunnerson to replace Sheriff Tom Boyd, whom he has murdered. While on his way, Gunnerson is beaten to the draw in a gun fight with undercover U.S. Marshal Nevada Jack McKenzie, who then poses as Gunners and plans with fellow marshal Sandy Hopkins to rout the Keene gang and ensure the townspeople of an honest election. Posing as a school teacher, Sandy gains the confidence of the townsfolk and with Judge Darcy and his daughter, Alice, proceeds with the details of the election. Keene gets word of Gunnerson's death and plans to eliminate Nevada. The latter, aware of Keene's plan, beats Keene to the draw and then helps to bring in the deciding votes form Northford. Nevada and Sandy ride out of town to new adventures.
