The song uses the Romance theme from the Lieutenant Kijé Suite by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev, and its lead-in includes a snippet from the Soviet news program Vremya in which the famed Soviet news broadcaster Igor Kirillov says in Russian: "...The British Prime Minister described the talks with the head of the delegation, Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev, as a constructive, realistic, practical and friendly exchange of opinions...", referring to the meeting of Mikhail Gorbachev and Margaret Thatcher in 1984. The Soviet leader at the time was Konstantin Chernenko. Also in the background, communications from the Apollo-Soyuz mission can be heard.

The music video, directed by Samuel Bayer, stars Heather DeLoach as the "Bee Girl", a young tap dancer wearing a homemade bee costume and large glasses, modeled after the Blind Melon album's cover: a family picture of Georgia Graham, younger sister of drummer Glen Graham. The Bee Girl's story is inter-cut with footage of Blind Melon performing in a field against a clear blue sky. It opens on the girl's tap routine; the audience responds with laughter, and the girl runs off stage in tears. As the song plays, she wanders through a city, stopping to perform her dance for whoever will watch. Ultimately at the point in the song where the word "escape" is repeated - she peeks through a gate, astonished, then runs through it to join a group of "bee people" of all shapes and sizes dancing joyfully in a green field.

The Cranberries perform in the music video "Zombie" from the album "No Need to Argue" recorded for Island Records. The video begins with black and white footage of British soldiers patrolling in Northern Island. The band plays as Dolores O'Riordan sings as she stands painted gold in front of a cross.

Hole performs in the music video "Doll Parts" from the album "Live Through This" recorded for DGC Records. The music video begins with a black and white sequence of Courtney Love in a white room and later in a bed as she sings. She plays with the band in a room with yellow painted walls.

Pearl Jam performs in the black and white version of the music video "Jeremy" from the album "Ten" recorded for Epic Records. The video details the life of a trouble boy who is bullied and tormented at school. The band performs on a rotating stage that circles around while clips of the troubled boy play throughout.

INXS performs in the music video "Beautiful Girl" from the album "Welcome to Wherever You Are" recorded for Atlantic Records. The music video begins with shots of the faces of the band as they are colored with different lights. The faces of women and text are shown as the band plays.

Official music video for Alice in Chains' 1993 single "Rooster" based on the traumatic experiences of Jerry Fulton Cantrell, the father of the band's founder, guitarist and co-vocalist, Jerry Cantrell, in the Vietnam War.
