The film "The Island of Rulers" presents the results of many years of research by archaeologists and other scientists on the origins of the Polish state. The creators used computer reconstructions to recreate the topography of Ostrów Lednicki from the 10th-11th centuries. The monuments discovered on the island and on the bottom of Lake Lednickie are shown. The most probable hypotheses concerning the construction of bridges in 963 and the invasion of the Czech prince Brzetyslav in 1039 were also presented. The film is completed with staging of fights and meetings between the Polish prince Mieszko I and the Czech princess Dobrawa, as well as the Polish king Boleslaw Chrobry and Emperor Otto III.

The film presents interesting archaeological research, recalling the legend of the city of Wineta, a port and an important trade center, which is to be located on the Wolin Island at the mouth of the Odra River. The 11th-century German chronicler Adam from Bremen mentioned it first. This wealthy city was to be looted and destroyed by the Danes in the mid-11th century. With time, a legend was written that Wineta was swallowed up by the sea, which was a punishment for the faults of its inhabitants.

Was the leader of the barbarians, Prince Mieszko I, surely baptized in 966? Where was this rite held and was it really the end of pagan beliefs in Poland? What is the path of the Piast state, the path of the pagans to the mighty Poland in the community of Christian member states?

The authors of the film, together with scientists, are looking for the birthplace of the royal Piast dynasty. Is it really the city of Gniezno or maybe a city in Kalisz-Zawodzie? Scientists of various specialties present arguments for and against these theories. Thanks to computer animation, viewers can learn the secrets of the everyday life of the former inhabitants of the fortified city and learn about the great political events of those times.
