Insurer Dolezal, uncompromising in his office, a regular husband and father of twelve-year-old Jirka and little Alice, spends a business trip a night with secretary Vlasta. In the morning, on the way back, accidentally runs over a little boy.

The young daughter of a schoolmaster ,growing up in a small town, defiantly opposes everything hypocritical and unstraightforward in her petty bourgeois surroundings .

The engine-driver Matys rescues his locomotive, which he affectionately calls Lisa, from the Second World War dive-bombers. He himself, however, is wounded during the attacks. Recovering at home, he looks forward to the end of the war so as to be able to ride his repaired locomotive again. The war finally comes to an end. Matys's son-in-law Vojta is an engine-driver, too. On the day his son is born, Vojta gets drunk and forgets about his duty. He is called for, but cannot be found. The colleagues persuade old Matys to secretly substitute for Vojta.

Mr. Novák, a clerk at the insurance company, cares only about his job. Even the social changes in February 1948 leave him indifferent. He only becomes aware of them when the insurance company is closed down. He has to make a decision: either retire or go to work in a factory.

He even starts flirting with the glass cutter Lída, even though he knows that she is Franta's girlfriend. By not servicing the windlass properly, Ruda causes an accident with Franta's glider. Lída, who is the only witness to the accident, doesn't reveal Ruda's guilt. The event shakes Ruda so much that he becomes aware of his faults and changes his attitude toward people and work.

Baker Jan Racek (Vladimír Repa) is a very hard-working and sensible man. His great passion is pigeon-keeping--and also, for many years, Ruzenka (Ludmila Vostrcilová). They are planning to get married, but Racek is so busy waiting for the pigeons' return that he misses the wedding. The couple are getting no younger, so the otherwise gentle Ruzenka becomes angry about this and gives Racek an ultimatum: it will be her or those pigeons.
