  • Samurai Shodown 64 (1997)

    18. Samurai Shodown 64

    1997Video Game
Samurai Shodown 64 is a versus fighting game, the first in the series to use fully 3D modeled graphics instead of 2D sprites. There are 11 selectable characters each with their own background stage. Players can move in any direction and the backgrounds have multiple levels. It is possible to knock opponents through walls or floors into a different section of stage, for example from the deck of a ship onto the docks. Opponents can also be knocked out of the ring, resulting in a "ring out" victory. Win two rounds to win the match and move onto the next opponent. Each character has a life bar and also has a "stamina bar" which decreases with excessive movement and attacks, and refills when inactive. There is also a yellow "POW meter" at the bottom of the screen. Once this reaches a maximum the fighter has unlimited stamina for a short while and also the ability to execute a super move. Throughout the game there are black-white writings and character illustrations, similar in style to Japanese calligraphy. For example, when a match is over there is a victory screen in black-and-white brush style, with a close-up of the winner or an animation of the defeated fighter.

Two worlds once existed since ancient times. The world of the living, Ushyo, and the land of the dead, Tokoyo. A legendary boundary to forever separate them, The Hell's Gate, has existed since the birth of myths to keep an universal balance. There is said to be four gods that defend it: Seiryu of the East, Byakko of the West, Genbu of the North, and Suzaku of the South. They eternally perform their duty from the shadows of legend and were eventually forgotten by people as time passed.

Long before humanity existed, death was an unknown, equally distant concept. When death first came to the world, the "Messenger from Afar" was born. With time, the Sealing Rite was held to seal Death behind Hell's Gate. At that time, two worlds, one near and one far, were born, beginning the history of life and death. Half a year has passed since Suzaku's madness, and the underworld is still linked by a great portal. Our world has been called upon. Legends of long ago told of the sealing of the boundary between the two worlds. The Sealing Rite would be necessary to hold back the spirits of that far away world.
