This is a list of movies that I think are best approached as 'moving paintings with sound'. These movies don't place as much emphasis on characters or plot; usually they have incredible cinematograhpy, effects, sound design, etc, or pose philosophical questions, or are a series of vignettes of a setting. I like these movies better on subsequent viewings (when I'm not trying to follow a character, but just appreciating the 'art' of the film).
