  • François Truffaut, Shintarô Ishihara, Marcel Ophüls, Renzo Rossellini, and Andrzej Wajda in Love at Twenty (1962)

    1. Love at Twenty

    19621h 50m
    7.2 (2.5K)
"Love at Twenty" unites five directors from around the world to present their different perspectives on what love really is at the age of 20. The episodes are united with the score of Georges Delerue and still photos of Henri Cartier-Bresson. The directors create their peculiar scenarios with Truffaut revisiting Antoine Doinel, this time finding some meaning to his life while getting involved with a girl; Renzo Rossellini's episode about an abandoned mistress; Ishihara's tale about an obsessive love; Ophüls' story about a pregnant woman trying to plot against the baby's father; and Wajda presenting a confusing relationship between people from different generations.

    4. Pearls of the Deep

    19651h 47m
    6.5 (855)
Five non-related vignettes are presented, each showcasing the need and want for human connection. In "Mr. Baltazar's Death", a middle aged couple who are experts at mechanics, travel to a motorcycle race where they congregate with the masses on the section of the course where historically there has been the most action of the destructive kind. In "Imposters", two elderly hospital patients talk about their past professional glories as a journalist and light opera star respectively. Each man wants to hear about the other more than tell his own story for good reason. In "The House of Joy", two national insurance agents believe they have an easy sale when they visit an elderly goat farmer/amateur painter, who uses whatever surface as his canvass, and paints his life and his dreams. But the sale will not be as easy as the men first believe it will be. In "The Restaurant the World", a wedding reception is taking place in one part of a busy self-serve diner. The reception guests are oblivious to the sadness of real life taking place all around their small current vacuum of a world, with the bride determined to make the most of *her* night. And in "Romance", a working class lad, out on the town on his own, is mesmerized by a young Romani girl.

    16. Love and Anger

    19691h 42m
    5.8 (893)
Five short stories with contemporary settings. In New York, people are indifferent to derelicts sleeping on sidewalks, to a woman's assault in front of an apartment building, and to a couple injured in a car crash. A man, stripped of his identity, dies in bed with actors expressing his agony. A cheerful, innocent young man walking a city street in a time of war pays a price for this innocence. A couple talks about cinema while they watch another couple talk of love and truth on the eve of one character's return to Cuba. Striking students take over a university classroom; an argument follows about revolution or incremental change.

At last filmmaker Otto Spalt wants to do what he has always dreamed of: the time has come to make his big feature film. There's just one little thing he still needs: the money. At the 189th board meeting of the Executive Committee for the Evaluation of Film Projects the combined expertise of a grotesque jury will decide Otto's future film. Will Otto manage to convince the panel of his artistic talent? Otto Spalt is relying wholly on the effects of his five short films, which he duly presents to the illustrious tribunal: a lavish production involving 5000 actors ("Phantom"), a sensitive melodrama addressing the question of the right direction in life ("Backwards"), a duel with the inherent violence of the flesh ("Meat Ball Pauli"), a breathtaking action-packed thriller ("Murder By Scissors") and a sizzling tale of espionage about micro- and potato-chips ("Close Up") are calculated to open the eyes and the purse of the Film Productions Committee.
