- DirectorTi WestStarsCharley Rowan McCainSimon PrastMia GothIn 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past.9/10: It's a well made movie with great performances, sets, story, characters, etc. The only problem with it is that it's a thriller/horror movie, but it only nails the thriller and not the horror.
- DirectorJeff NicholsStarsAustin ButlerJodie ComerTom HardyAfter a chance encounter, headstrong Kathy is drawn to Benny, member of Midwestern motorcycle club the Vandals. As the club transforms into a dangerous underworld of violence, Benny must choose between Kathy and his loyalty to the club.8/10: It's strong on a technical level, and it's stuffed with great performances. Its main downside is not having a character to focus on.
- DirectorAlex GarlandStarsKirsten DunstWagner MouraCailee SpaenyIn a dystopian future, four journalists travel across the United States during a nation-wide conflict. While trying to survive, they aim to reach the White House to interview the president before he is overthrown.8/10: It's fantastic on a technical and acting level, and it feels very slice of life, like this is how things would operate in an actual civil war in the modern-day US. The characters are well written and acted, and while more could be done on their angle, they work extremely well.
- DirectorMichael SarnoskiStarsLupita Nyong'oJoseph QuinnAlex WolffA young woman named Sam finds herself trapped in New York City during the early stages of an invasion by alien creatures with ultra-sensitive hearing.8/10: It has a fresh take on the apocalypse genre (focusing on character more than survival), and utilizes the premise for creative purposes much better than the first two films. The acting is strong, the production design is great, and the location is perfect.
- DirectorOsgood PerkinsStarsMaika MonroeNicolas CageBlair UnderwoodIn pursuit of a serial killer, an FBI agent uncovers a series of occult clues that she must solve to end his terrifying killing spree.8/10: It's a genuinely creepy horror film akin to Silence of the Lambs, with fantastic acting, editing, and directing. The problems fall into place with the story, which is a bit too predictable.
- DirectorEdward BergerStarsRalph FiennesStanley TucciJohn LithgowWhen Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with leading one of the world's most secretive and ancient events, selecting a new Pope, he finds himself at the center of a web of conspiracies and intrigue that could shake the very foundation of the Catholic Church.8/10: It's a well-acted, slice of life, character drama that sometimes feels like a more believable plot line from a Dan Brown thriller. It does suffer from some occasional lackluster shots that aren't up to par with the rest of the aesthetics and some slowness in the pacing.
- DirectorParker FinnStarsNaomi ScottRosemarie DeWittLukas GageAbout to embark on a world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events. Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and the pressures of fame, Skye is forced to face her past.8/10: It's well edited and shot, and Naomi Scott is incredible in the main role. It has a strong atmosphere to it and there are a number of well-choreographed scares throughout. There's also a number of interesting ideas in the film, such as the lead being stocked by an otherwise unseeable force is a spotlight celebrity with a checkered past. That being said, that's also the biggest problem with the film: the main character never really transcends above that checkered-pasted celebrity character into a fully fleshed out person.
- DirectorAli AbbasiStarsSebastian StanJeremy StrongMartin DonovanA young man took over his father's real-estate business in 1970s and '80s New York, and got the helping hand of an infamous closeted gay lawyer who helped him turn this young man into a notorious legend. Based on true events.8/10: Granted, it's nothing unexpected to people who've been paying attention from at least yesterday, but it's a very sincere and well-done attempt at a facts-as-they-are biopic about a current and controversial figure. Sebastian Stan does a good job of portraying Trump without it becoming comical or satirist, and Jeremy Strong and Maria Bakalova are great in their roles. The pacing is off, but the writing, especially when it comes to characters, is well done.
- DirectorCord JeffersonStarsJeffrey WrightSkyler WrightJohn AlesA novelist who's fed up with the establishment profiting from Black entertainment uses a pen name to write a book that propels him into the heart of the hypocrisy and madness he claims to disdain.8/10: It's a well-written and acted satire with some hilarious and deep moments. The characters are interesting, the story is engaging, and there's a strong theme of identity throughout.
- DirectorLuca GuadagninoStarsMike FaistJosh O'ConnorZendayaTashi, a former tennis prodigy turned coach, transformed her husband into a champion. But to overcome a recent losing streak and redeem himself, he'll need to face off against his former best friend and Tashi's ex-boyfriend.8/10: Despite some issues with the characters and the generic nature of the story, the acting, music, cinematography, and editing (especially during the match scenes) is top notch and generates suspense and interest despite a lacking of personal connection to the drama.
- DirectorEthan CoenStarsMargaret QualleyGeraldine ViswanathanBeanie FeldsteinJamie regrets her breakup with her girlfriend, while Marian needs to relax. In search of a fresh start, they embark on an unexpected road trip to Tallahassee. Things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals.7/10- It falls into convenience factors from time to time, and the Beanie Feldstein character, while well acted and written, has an underdeveloped role in the movie, the writing, acting, and characters are all great, and it has a strong sense of dark humor that's well executed.
- DirectorJoachim RønningStarsDaisy RidleyTilda Cobham-HerveyStephen GrahamThe story of competitive swimmer Gertrude Ederle, who, in 1926, was the first woman to ever swim across the English Channel.7/10: It's a fairly typical sports-drama film, which is well-performed, has simplistic but well-written characters, and knows how to utilize its score and cinematography.
- DirectorClint EastwoodStarsNicholas HoultToni ColletteJ.K. SimmonsWhile serving as a juror in a high-profile murder trial, a family man finds himself struggling with a serious moral dilemma, one he could use to sway the jury verdict and potentially convict or free the wrong killer.7/10: Explainable, but highly illogical, issues plague this film, and it also feels like a try-hard version of 12 Angry Men. The acting, editing, and directing is well done, but the writing is try-hard and simplistic.
- DirectorChris SandersStarsLupita Nyong'oPedro PascalKit ConnorAfter a shipwreck, an intelligent robot called Roz is stranded on an uninhabited island. To survive the harsh environment, Roz bonds with the island's animals and cares for an orphaned baby goose.6/10: While the narrative and character development are all rushed, thus giving it a forced and manipulative feeling that a lot of animated films have, the way its handled feels more earned. The animation is unique and beautiful, the characters and gags are fun, the music and sound design are wonderful, and despite the rushed handling, things feel very organic.
- DirectorZelda WilliamsStarsKathryn NewtonLiza SoberanoJenna DavisA coming of RAGE love story about a teenager and her crush, who happens to be a corpse. After a set of horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a journey to find love, happiness - and a few missing body parts.6/10: It definitely feels like a Tim Burton movie, but in the sense that someone really wanted to mimic said feeling or knew it was the best way to do it, and did it well. The premise, writing, and characters are all fun, and the production design is enjoyable. At the end of the day, it's just a pretty typical movie that you know the story of from the trailer.
- DirectorGeorge MillerStarsAnya Taylor-JoyChris HemsworthTom BurkeAfter being snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers, while the tyrants Dementus and Immortan Joe fight for power and control, the young Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.6/10: While it has the George Miller flair from Fury Road, it doesn't succeed as successfully. Because of its prequel status, what will and won't happen is known, robbing certain scenes of their weight, and the characters aren't that interesting either. It's simultaneously engaging, yet boring.
- DirectorsIan BonhôtePeter EttedguiStarsChristopher ReeveWill ReeveDana ReeveReeve's rise to becoming a film star follows with a near-fatal horse-riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed from the neck down. After the accident, he became an activist for spinal cord injury treatments and disability rights.6/10: It's a pretty typical documentary that is emotionally poignant with some personal stories and less-known information to add to the story about Reeve that most people already know.
- DirectorLee Isaac ChungStarsDaisy Edgar-JonesGlen PowellAnthony RamosKate Carter, a retired tornado-chaser and meteorologist, is persuaded to return to Oklahoma to work with a new team and new technologies.6/10: It's a fun action/disaster movie that delivers exactly what it promises, and is a good followup to the first film.
- DirectorsDavid ZellnerNathan ZellnerStarsJesse EisenbergRiley KeoughChristophe Zajac-DenekA year in the life of a unique family. It captures the daily life of the Sasquatch with a level of detail and rigor that is simply unforgettable.6/10: It's an incredibly amusing movie that feels slice-of-life like for a sasquatch family, though it's repetitive to the point where the same jokes and story beats keep happening.
- DirectorMarielle HellerStarsAmy AdamsScoot McNairyArleigh SnowdenA woman pauses her career to be a stay-at-home mom, but soon her domesticity takes a surreal turn.6/10: It's a one-note, but creative, premise, with over-explanatory dialogue, that's filled with strong peroformances that help to elevate it.
- DirectorsCameron CairnesColin CairnesStarsDavid DastmalchianLaura GordonIan BlissA live television broadcast in 1977 goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation's living rooms.6/10: It has a fantastic first two-thirds with great writing, acting, and character building, but falls apart in the last third as everything is over-explained and the entire movie gets boringly rehashed.
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsTimothée ChalametZendayaRebecca FergusonPaul Atreides unites with the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future.6/10: It's elevated by its technical aspects and the acting, but the characters and the story feel underdeveloped and rushed despite the nearly three hour runtime.
- DirectorEllen KurasStarsKate WinsletAndy SambergAlexander SkarsgårdWar correspondent Lee Miller travels to the front lines of World War II to embark on a mission to uncover the hidden truths of the Third Reich. But in the wake of betrayal, a reckoning will come over the truths of her own past. It's a pretty cliche-written and typical biopic with some great acting from Winslet, and good character and acting moments.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsPaul MescalDenzel WashingtonPedro PascalAfter his home is conquered by the tyrannical emperors who now lead Rome, Lucius is forced to enter the Colosseum and must look to his past to find strength to return the glory of Rome to its people.6/10: It's great visually and on a technical level, marked by decent performances and a lot of exciting action sequences. There is a lot of repetition between this film's plot and the first one's, and the characters are not as fleshed out as they should be, and a lot of the character elements of the movie feel weightless.
- DirectorJames MangoldStarsTimothée ChalametEdward NortonElle FanningIn 1961, an unknown 19-year-old Bob Dylan arrives in New York City with his guitar and forges relationships with musical icons on his meteoric rise, culminating in a groundbreaking performance that reverberates around the world.6/10: It chronicles a period of time in Bob Dylan's life, which is interesting and has a lot of great character stuff with the secondary cast, but not much from Dylan's character. The audience gets to know his music, but not him as a person. Timothee Chalamet, and also the rest of the cast, gives a great performance, but Dylan is written as kind of a blank slate. At the end of the day, it feels more like a movie that wanted to be more of a Best of Bob Dylan album than a biopic.
